Huskers drop in poll Two major changes occurred in this week’s Associated Press Top 25 football poll. Notre Dame, which opened its season by defeating Virginia 36-13 in the Kickoff Classic, moved from sec ond to first in this week’s poll. Michi gan, which opens its season against the Fighting Irish Sept. 16, dropped from first to second. The second major change involved Nebraska, which dropped from third to fourth. The Comhuskcrs open their season Saturday against Northern Illi nois. In addition to Notre Dame, Michi gan and Nebraska, the remainder of the lop-10 teams in the The AP Top 25 included third-ranked Miami, fifth ranked Auburn and sixth-ranked UCLA. Arkansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Clemson rounded out the top 10. Eventual rhythm leads Huskers to a three set victory By Cory Golden Staff Reporter____ After being shaken and rattled in the first set, the Nebraska volleyball team found its rhythm and rolled over the Iowa Hawkeyes. Nebraska defeated Iowa 15-11, 15-12, 15-6 before a crowd of 1,257 Saturday at the NU Coliseum. With the Comhuskcrs leading 4-0 in the first set, Nebraska junior out side hitter Linda Barsncss was helped off the floor by the Nebraska trainers after suffering a knee injury. Barsncss tore an anterior circulate ligament and is out for the remainder of the season. Nebraska coach Terry Pettit said Barsncss probably will have surgery later this week. Pettit said the loss of Barsncss knocked Nebraska out of sync in the first set. “I think it sh(X)k us a hit,” Pettit said. “1 think we never did gel into a rhythm.” Nebraska increased its lead to 6-0 before Iowa battled back to pull within one at 11-10 in the first set. Nebraska trailed by scores of 7-3 and 12-9 in the second and 3-0 in third before winning all three games. Pettit said it look a little lime for the Huskers to adjust to playing with out Barsness, who led Nebraska in kills last season with 465. “Toward the middle of the second game we started to get the ball to (Janet) Kruse and our middle and we got into a rhythm,” Pettit said. Kruse finished with 12 kills and a .409 hitting percentage. Senior All American Virginia Stahr had 10 kills with a .714 hitting percentage. , Barsness’ replacement, freshman Debbie Brand, of Adelaide, South Australia, contributed four kills and a team-high eight digs. Pettit said he was pleased with the play of Brand. “Thai’s a pretty lough situation to pul a freshman in,’ ’ he said. “It’s one thing to put a freshman in when they know they can come back out. It’s another thing when you know you need to produce. Debbie’s an experi enced player. I thought she handled it really well.’’ Barsncss became the Huskcrs’ second outside hitter to be sidelined because of injury. Sophomore Cris Hall hasn't played yet this season be cause of back spasms. Pettit said he was pleased with the way the Huskcrs played in absence of two experienced outside hitters. “Iowa’s a good team,’’ he said. “It is not an easy team, more impor tantly, it’s an experienced team and it’s a team that’s just not going to give up.’’ Iowa coach Ruth Nelson said the unranked Hawkeyes will be a legiti mate top-20 team this year. “We’ll be fine this season,’’ Nel son said. "We will be a good, solid top-20 team by the end of the sea ___ t» son.
