Police unit may change By Theresa Sindelar Staff Reporter The University of Ncbraska-Lin coln Police Department may face restructuring because of Gale Gade’s Thursday retirement, according to John Goebel, vice chan cellor for business and finance. Goebel said Gade had served as captain of UNL police for 20 years and was in charge of every aspect of the department, including working with city and state police. Goebel, who also oversees the police department, said he has “no preconceived notions about a future structure’ ’ and wants to get a sense of all available choices. “We are looking at documents from other programs and schools in order to find a campus unit to handle both parking and security,” Goebel said. “It should take between 90 and 120 days to reach a tentative struc ture,” Goebel said, “and then other groups will be asked to review the system.” Goebel said the plan will be pre sented to the chancellor’s staff, an expanded police advisory board and a representative body of students, for feedback. Goebel said Ken Caublc and John Burke currently arc serving as joint interim lieutenants. In addition to shared responsibili ties as lieutenants, Caublc oversees campus security and Burke special izes in the parking division. Goebel said there is a possibility that a new captain will be appointed. jp■■bhhhhhaclip and savei j 0 .NEED CASH? j There's A | iiMg i Conveniently Near You ■ I I I I »44th and “0”, Texaco •13th and “Q”, Gunny’s •16th and "N”, Texaco •14th and Adams, Kwik Shop •13th and South, Gas + Plus •33rd and Pioneers, Texaco •33rd and Holdrege, Kwik Shop •56th and Holdrege, Kwik Shop •56th and South, Kwik Shop •56th and Hwy. 2, Alamo Shopping Center •4500 Cornhusker, Kwik Shop I I ■ I The Martell State Bank Martell, Nebraska, 68404 794-5375 ■ ■ Member FDIC I I I h ■■■■■(!■■ aclip and save* ■■■■■■■J Academic Success Center creates new student programs, workshops _ By Jennifer (Jilloglv Staff Reporter____ The Academic Success Center will implement several changes this year in its program to help students “learn how to learn, said new director Ken Diewra. “College is not too late for learning effective study tech niques,” he said. Kicwra, an associate professor of educational psychology, has been at the University of Nc braska-Lincoln for two years. Be sides directing the Academic Suc cess Center, Kicwra teaches undergraduate classes lor the Teachers College. One major change Kicwra plans to implement at the center is a “unique” system teaching stu dents that information can be rep resented and learned in hierarchi cal patterns. “We teach them to identify concepts as opposed to memoriza tion techniques,” Kicwra said. Counselors teach students to take notes that represent these pat terns by using techniques like matrix boxes. Matrix boxes arc grids that stu dents use to compare subjects. Different poems, for example, arc placed vertically on the left hand side of the grid. Concepts used to compare poems, such as theme, style and mood, arc placed horizontally on the top of the grid. The intermediate boxes arc used for comparison. Kicwra said a matrix box allows students to sec relationships be tween topics they have covered in class and new topics. The center will offer courses on “Teaching students how to learn” through tlic University Founda tions classes. The classes will specialize in teaching study skills. Kiewra said a limited number of sections will be available. “With continued support 1 would hope to see more sections available in the future,” Kicwra said. UNL is offering one such course this fall and will offer two in the spring, Kiewra said. David Hanaan/Daily Nebraskan Ken Kiewa, new Academic Success Center director. In addition to teaching study skills, the center will continue to offer tutoring classes. Tutors no longer will assist stu dents on individual subjects, Kiewra said. They will teach stu dents how to study, he said. Another new program offers workshops for public school teach ers. Kiewra said the workshops arc designed to teach teachers how to teach study skills and note-taking. “I believe that effective study skills should be developed at the elementary school level and that all teachers arc capable of embed ding study strategy techniques into their existing classes,’’ Kicwra said. Kiewra said research and devel opment also will be given a higher priority this year. The center is producing new materials for all of its activities and is conducting ongoing evaluations of its pro grams. It will continue to provide vari ous academic success workshops as well as supplemental instruction in selected introductory classes. RESEARCH Shedding light on birth defects.
