year ago have paid off.
Genoways said during the first
six hours on Sunday when it was
open to die public, 2,800 people
came to the exhibit.
"We had people standing in
the rain waiting to get in,"
Genoways said. "They were
lined up all the way out to die
street”
Genoways said he was sur
prised that die number of adults
in attendance Sunday, especially
the number of college-age
people, was greater than the
number of children.
“I didn’t expect to see that,
frankly,” he said.
And Genoways said project
coordinators anticipate many
more visitors to the exhibit. He
said he expects as many as 200
school groups to visit the exhibit
before it leaves.
Genoways said the exhibit
intentionally was scheduled to
coincide with the Nebraska State
Fair, so people from greater
Nebraska could come to the
exhibit.
Proceeds from the exhibit will
be divided equally between
Dinamation International, the
Friends of the University State
Museum and Folsom’s Children
Zoo.
Genoways said the museum
will use the money to dean and
restore the skeletons in the main
hall. He said the display in “ele
phant hall” is the world’s most
comprehensive collection of
prehistoric elephants, masta- '%
dons and mammoths.
“We’re protecting an irre
placeable resource,” Genoways
said.
Chapo said the exhibit serves f
as the zoo's annual fund-raising ,
event. He said in past yours ihe •>
zoo has relied on fairly common $
fund-raising themes, such as ^
dinners and dances, to generate
the money needed to care for
the animals and property while -
the zoo is dosed for winter.
"The board said, ‘Let’s do B
something different this year/”
he said. ‘This is something dif
ferent"
The dinosaur exhibit fits the ft
zoo’s attitude toward serving the
community, Chapo said.
"The Children’s Zoo is a fun,
hands-on learning zoo,” he said.
"At the Children’s Zoo you can
rub noses with the. camels. At
this exhibit you can rub noses
with an Apatosaurus”
The exhibit is open from 10
a m. to 8 p.m. Monday through
Saturday and noon to 6 p.m.
Sunday.
