    roup president Lorraine Ross Hall.
“We all learned the Midwestern
ork ethic young,’ ’ Robert Hall said.
It’s a good thing that they did,
"cording to Hall’s wife, former
NL student Lorraine Ross Hall.
“No one gets paid at all. We just
0 n because we love the theater,”
She said.
Group members have different
>bs during the day to pay the rent;
ccupations range from bookkeeping
) teaching nursery school.
Ross Hall said the group has a
jase on a 60-seat theater (the Pelican
heater) in New York City, and that
feels fortunate to have that.
“There are a lot of groups that
on’t even have that much. At least
ze know that we have a permanent
°\Vhen asked if attending UNL was
! g00d base for a theater career .. Ross
{all did not hesitate.
“No.! think that in order to do this
veil (acting), you need to get out
here and do it. Certain things can’t be
aught.
Former UNL student and New
lude Mechanicals group member
'onstancc McCord disagrees.
' “There were teachers there that
vcrc very influential to me; Mitch
Teboe (group member), Bob (Hall)
and Harley (actress Harley Kozak,
»lso a former Nebraska student).”
She cited teachers Ray Morgan, Jerry
Lewis and Nancy Meyers as particu
larly strong influences.
“The technical support in the
program was wonderful,” McCord
said.
McCord also mentioned how
hard it can be to break into the theater
business if one does not have profes
sional contacts. She said that she
commended UNL Theater Director
Tice Miller for attempting to forge
these contacts for current UNL stu
dents.
‘‘Tice was a teacher when I was at
the University... he’s a good influ
ence. He’s trying hard to make pro
fessional contacts (for the current
theater students), and that’s very
important.”
Many of the theater group mem
bers also have performed with the
Nebraska Repertory Theatre. Hall is
1
artistic director of the theater.
He said that he would like to keep
the cooperation between the two
groups open.
“I’d like to keep that interaction
going, Hall said. “The New Rude
Mechanicals is not an exclusively
Nebraskan theater group, and you
don’t have to be a Nebraskan to join,
but the cooperation between the Rep
and the New Rude Mechanicals has
been mutually beneficial.”
Lorraine Ross Hall agreed.
‘The connection is not official,
but it just worked out that way,’ ’ she
said.
The theater is in its third season at
the present time, and has staged a
number of works. This year, Hall
directed Shakespeare’s “Henry V”
and acted in Shakespeare’s
Macbeth.”
Holms, who will serve as visiting
director for UNL’s department of
theater arts and dance this fall, di
rected “Macbeth.” Hall plans to di
rect Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”
for the New Rude Mechanicals.
One question that often seems to
come to mind when seeing the
group’s title is “Where the heck did
they get their name?”
Hall explains.
“Actually, the name is from
Shakespeare. It’s from the play ‘A
Midsummer Night’s Dream’. In that
play, actors were referred to as Rude
Mechanicals because they had no
money. Well, we had no money when
we started this group, so we decided
that the name fit. We added the ‘new ’
because we’re obviously not the old
Rude Mechanicals, and because it
seems to fit with the name.”
Hall said another reason for
choosing the name is: “It looks really
good on a T-shirt.”
Besides the T-shirt value, Hall
said that the name is so unusual that
people who hear about it usually ask
about it.
“And once they’ve asked about it,
they’re hooked,” Hall said. “We’ve
got them if we can get them to that
point.”
