Air France hijackers arrested ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) - An unarmed Algerian emigre took con trol of an Air France airliner flying from Paris to Algiers with 115 people aboard Wednesday, but he was ar rested when the plane landed at Algi ers airport, officials said. News reports in Paris said the man was being expelled from France to his homeland when he hijacked the Air bus A300. An Air France spokeswoman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the hijacking ended at 3:25 p.m. (10:25 a.m. EDT), barely an hour after the plane landed at Houari Boumedienne airport east of the Algerian capital. She said the 102 passengers and 13 members of the crew were all safe. Officials at the airport control tower, speaking on condition of ano nymity, said the hijacker had de manded the convening of an interna tional conference on the war in Leba Algerian police identified the hi jacker as Said Djamel, alias Bendada, a 30-year-old merchant in Paris. The French news agency Agcnce Francc-Presse, citing unidentified sources in Paris, said the man was being expelled for “violating public order” and that he “displayed great agitation” before being put on the flight to Algiers. The Air France spokeswoman said she could not confirm the reported demand, specify the number of hi jackers or give details of how the hijacking was ended. Initial reports from French air traf fic control sources had said the flight of the Airbus A300 from Paris to Algiers had been diverted toward Tunisia. France said the warships were dispatched to evacuate 7,000 French nationals in Lebanon if the 5-month old battle between Moslem and Christian forces worsens. But the Moslems accuse the French of back ing the Christians. ! Police arrest assassination suspects BOGOTA, Colombia - Police said they arrested five suspects Tuesday night in the assassination of leading presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan at a campaign rally. His slay ing has been blamed on cocaine traf fickers. The five were presented to local reporters at national police headquar ters and shown on television. They were dressed in casual, well-worn clothing. Police said all five were Colom bian, and identified them as Armando Bernal Acosta, Norberto Morillo Charalca, Pedro Zembrano Delgado, Luis Gonzalez Chacoo and Jubis Hazvumb. Police said the five men were ar rested at a downtown apartment. No other details were immediately re leased. The police also said they started proceedings to extradite a purported iBimmrnmmmmmmmmm manager of drug money to the United States, where he laces conspiracy charges involving a billion-doll^ money-laundering scheme. Authorities reported more raids and seizures on the fourth day of their nationwide crackdown on the drug underworld. The country’s judges planned to return to their duties, end ing a strike called after a judge and police official were killed Thursday. The extradition of Eduardo Marti nez Romero, said to manage funds for the notorious Medellin cartel, was seen as a test of the government’s pledge to hand over cocaine traffick ers to the United Stales. The powerful cocaine cartels in the past have cowed the courts through a system atic campaign pf terror. Martinez escaped arrest this spring in Panama on the day U S. officials announced his indictment in connection with the drug-laundering scheme. The indictment followed an investigation which resulted in charges against 127 people and two Latin American banks. U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh said the United States is moving to extradite Marline/, even though his name was not on a list of the ‘4 Dozen Most Wanted ” drug traf fickers Thornburgh sent Tuesday to the Colombian government. The list focused on the leaders of the Medellin and Cali cartels. — — - — — — — — — — 1 t r————————————————————--i | Announcing: | □« Vs Sandwich Shoppe Under New Ownership I Grilled Hot Steak Sandwich ^ | Z's Sandwich Shoppe - Hot (drilled Chicken Sandwiches ^ ^ Hwy. 2 •Add cheese, mushrooms, green or hoi peppers for |u>l S 2V each “College Expenses Keep Going Up!
