As filmmaker Bruce Weber says, “Ev eryone has their own Chet Baker story.” “Let’s Get Lost” is Weber’s own endearing, often sad, interpretation of Baker. Baker rose to popularity in mid 1950s West Coast jazz clubs, where women and photographers were mesmerized by his good looks and camera presence. Known as the James Dean of the jazz world, one gets an idea of how Dean’s life itself may have unfolded. Personal interviews are the heart of the film. It’s an insightful, highly romantic documentary about the ecstasy of youth, the sensation of riding down Santa Monica Boulevard in a Cadil lac convertible with the top down. Weber, known primarily for fash ion photography and various ho Courtesy of She Won Film Theater “Let’s Get Lost”: an elegant, unsettling look at Chet Baker mocrotic fare, has created a stylish black and white montage. “Let’s Get Lost’’ is a visual feast throughout, mixing still photographs, old footage of Baker as an Italian B movie star and studio clips of the master record ing new tracks. In 1968, Baker was severely beaten outside a San Francisco hotel during a drug transaction. He turned to vocals and fell further into the heroin abyss. Last May in Amsterdam during the compilation of the film, Baker fell to his death from a hotel window on Friday the 13th. He was 57, but looked 100. “Let’s Get Lost’’ isn’t perfect. Many of the vocal scenes drag on, and some of the interviews are pointless, but Baker’s powerful persona and music are likable. And visually, the film is a masterpiece.
