UNL to out card catalogues on computers

With the flip of a switch, Univer
sity of Nebraska-Lincoln library offi
cials will ease the task of finding
materials at university libraries.
A $900,000 Integrated Library
System has been approved by the NU
Board of Regents for UNL libraries
- and the Law library.
Kent Hendrickson, dean of librar
ies, said the new system will convert
the card catalog into a machine-read
able format that can be accessed by
computer terminals.
Students and faculty will use
computers to find the location of li
brary materials.
The system will have a central
data base which will include informa
tion about when a book is shelved or
if it is checked out
Hendrickson said library officials
will install about 100 computers in
UNL libraries to begin the program.
He said he would like to have 200
computers by the time the system is in
full operation.
Library users shouldn’t have to
wait to find the location of materials,
Hendrickson said, because they can
use the card catalogue if they can’t
find a free computer, he said.
Hendrickson said UNL libraries
will eventually quit using the card
catalogue system once the computer
ized catalogue is fully operated.
-----—i
Students will have no problems
using the system while UNL installs
it in January 1990, he said.
“It will be easier to use than the
card catalog, and it won t cost the
user any money,” he said.
Sixty percent of the information in
the card catalogs has been put in the
computer system already, he said.
The remaining 40 percent will take
two to three years to put in the com
puter, he said.

constitutional amendment, the
legislature may have time to put
the issue on next year’s ballot,
Spire said. To get the amendment
on the ballot, 30 state senators, or
three-fifths of the legislature,
must approve the referendum.
Registered voters could also
petition for the change, although
Spire said this is a less frequently
used method.
Spire said that he expects the
court to decide on the case within
the year.
