Since Ward’s cartoons were
aimed at a television audience, he had
neither the time nor money to create
animation that would rival Disney’s
or Warner Brothers’ ornate cartoons
aimed at film audiences, according to
the New York Times.
Ward developed a process called
“limited animation.” Characters
barely moved and backgrounds had
little detail.
With limited animation, cartoons

could be produced faster and more
time could be spent on the script,
according to the Times. The limited
animation process was used on car
toons from the mid-1960s to the
1970s.
Foray’s versatile female voice
was also uncommon in the early ’60s.
Hardly any women were doing voices
for cartoons at that time, she said.
‘ ‘ I was sort of a phenomenon at the
time,” she said. “I was so utilitarian
that they (studios) would call me and
get any voice they wanted.”

Foray, who recently did voices for
"Who Framed Roger Rabbit?," is
currently the voice of Grammy
Gummi on the Saturday morning
cartoon, "The Gummi Bears." She
also docs voices for Ma Beagle on
"Duck Tales" and Jokey Smurf on
"The Smurfs." She is scheduled to
do voices for Matt Greening’s
Simpsons characters on Fox Net
work’s "Tracy Ullman Show."
Foray said she has been doing
voices since age 6. At the time, her
elementary school teacher had a ra
dio show and was not amused by the
young girl’s talents.
"She said she couldn’t teach me
anymore because 1 did more voices
than she did," Foray said.

be honored at the Flatwater Festival in
a retrospective of Ward’s work at the
Sheldon. Programs time are Friday at
1:15, 2:30,3:45 and 7:30 p.m.; Satur
day at noon, 2:30, and 3:45 p.m.; and
Sunday at noon, 1:15 and 2:30 p.m.
June Foray will appear as guest
speaker Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Satur
day at the 3:45 p.m. performance.
