Students can join NU sport clubs m Cindv Wostrel ___ _ ... , Jl Staff Reporter The Office of Campus Recrea tion offers many club sports that are little-known to many students. Gub sports differ from intra mural sports in that athletes in cl ub sports compete with students from other schools, whereas intramural athletes compete only with other students from the UNL campus. Like the intramural sports, any interested university student can participate. Many clubs exist in several are described below. • Boxing Chib: Students can Icam the fundamentals of boxing by Joining this club which com petes mainly in Nebraska. • Crew Club: Crew members practice everyday, said Scott Doyle, UNL Crew Club treasurer. Fall conditioning includes run ning stairs in Memorial Stadium. In the spring crew members lift weights and row daily. The University of Nebraska Crew Club has travelled to compe titions. known as regattas, in Topeka, Kan. and regional in Wisconsin. Members usually at tend about three regattas during each spring and fall semester. The club is in the process of rebuilding, Doyle said. The club would like to purchase four boats but the $40,000 needed is prohibi tive. it is likely that two boats will be purchased, he said. Any student interested in join ing should contact Doyle or Char lene Glccson. , f Fencing: This newly formed cluh has two of its members com peting in fencing nationals this summer. The Fencing Club cur rently has five members r id was organized by A1 Schmij, presi dent. v • Rugby: About 35 students have joined the Rugby Club, said Mark Palmer, treasurer. The club competes with teams from South Dakota and Creighton University. At regional*, the team placed sixth out of eight teams. That was very good for us ” Palmer said, because while there were two teams that showed strength, the rest were basically of equal caliber, r, J?? c,ubiusl got a new coach. Bill Me Vicker, Palmer said. Vince Powers had been the coach for the last 10 years, be said. Hie club is currently only open to male university students. He said a female student attempted to start a women’s club but that the plans fell through. Palmer is from New Zealand where rugby is the national sport He said the club seems to have a bright future. We’re getting a lot better,” he said. Dues for the club arc $15 for new members and $20 for re newal • Weightlifting: Studelhs in terested in joining the Weightlift ing Club can sign up until tne end of July in the weight room, which is located in the Coliseum. Some members of the club do compete throughout die region, which in cludes North Platte, Omaha and Lincoln, The office of Campus Recreation reimburses the club for entry fees, but members must pro vide their own transportation to meets. Daryl Jahn, equipment assis tant, said die club has a contract with Pershing Auditorium to pro vide security for events such as the World Wrestling Federation. Members then get into these events for free. Dues are $15 and pay for the shirts given to club members. • Sports Officiating Club: Students interested in officiating sports events may be able to join this club in the fall The club is not currently a recognized student organization. Campus Recreation is petitioning the Association of Students of the University of Ne braska for official recognition. The Sports Officiating Club, according to Kenda Shcely, coor dinator for intramural sports, would “provide an avenue for those interested in officiating after college.” If the club is recognized mem bers would then be able to officiate at local ninth and 10th grade high school games. There would.be no membership fees for the organization. Two Cornhuskers honored for academic achievements Comhusker golfer Ann Guiberson and softball player Janelle Frese have each received national honors for their academic achievements at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Guiberson, from Anderson Air Force Base, Md., has been honored by the National Women’s Golf Coaches Association and Frsse, from LaPalma, Calif., has been named to the GTE Academic All-America softball second-team. Guiberson, a sophomore recrea tional management major, received the national academic award for her i ~~1 .. 3.60 grade point average. She has twice been named to the Big Eight Academic Honor Roll and was a first team selection on this year’s Lee Jeans/Big Eight All-Academic team. She tied for 9th at this season’s Big Eight championships, and finished 8th her freshman season. Frese, a senior education and his tory major, was named to the GTE second-team after accumulating a 3.21 GPA during her four years at Nebraska.
