Huskers lose fifth inning lead, Shockers take charge
By Jerry Guenther
Staff Reporter
A fifth inning power surge by
Wichita State proved to be too much
for the Nebraska baseball team to
overcome Tuesday afternoon.
Wichita State, 48-9, scored four
runs on three consecutive homers to
left field during the fifth inning en
route to a 15-3 win.
Before the inning, Nebraska led 3
1 behind the pitching of freshman
Jason Abramavicius.
“When those guys hit the home
runs, that kind of lit the fire for us,“
Wichita State coach Gene Stephen
son said.
With two outs in the fifth, Eric
Wedge hit a two-run homer to tie the
game 3-3. Mike McDonald followed
with a blast over the scoreboard, be
fore Mike Jones homered over the
375 foot sign in left center field.
Despite the home runs, Nebraska
baseball coach John Sanders said he
was pleased by Abramavicius’s per
formance.
Abramavicius held the Shockers
to five runs — one of which was
earned -- before being relieved in the
seventh inning with the Shockers
leading 5-3.
“Jason did a nice job,” Sanders
said. “Looking back, I’d say maybe
Jason should have stayed in longer.
But that’s the job of the bullpen to
keep us in the game.”
After Abramavicius left, the
Shockers added another run in the
eighth and nine more in the ninth off
three different Nebraska pitchers.
Sanders said he was disappointed
by Nebraska’s play in the ninth.
“It was a combination of things,
errors and pitching, ... but when
things go bad, you have to overcome
it.”
Wichita State, which is rated third
by Baseball America and seventh by
Collegiate Baseball, collected 16 hits

against the Huskers.
The Huskers scored all three of
their runs in the third inning on RBI
hits by Doug Twitty, Bobby Ben
jamin and Shawn Buchanan.
Even though the runs gave the
Huskers a 3-1 lead, Stephenson said
he didn’t doubt his team’s ability to
come back.
‘‘I kind of figured we’d get out to
a slow start,” Stephenson said, “but
we picked it up at the end.
‘‘We’ve been hitting the long ball
quite a bit this year.”

next
The Hosers, the all-university

Nebraska Wesleyan University's
champion tonight at Taylor Gymna
sium, SSth Street and Huntington
Avenue. And Clare said he doesn’t
know anything about the team the
Hosers will play. Tipoff is scheduled
for 7 p.m.

“I know some friends at
Wesleyan who play basketball and
they didn’t even know who we are
playing,” Clare said. “They couldn’t
tell me anything about the competi
tion. I know they're the champions at
Wesleyan. Beyond that, I don’t know
anything about them.”
Clare said it doesn’t matter who
the Hosers will play because they
should win. Clare’s confidence is
based upon his team’s success against
the Runnin’ Reptiles, which the Hos
ers defeated 55-52 for the title.
“With the athletic ability of our
team, I don’t see how anyone could
hang with us,’’ Clare said. “Spring
football might have taken something
out of us, but it should be interesting.
But I’m not going to say that we’ll
walk away with it
“I’d be awfully surprised if they
had a team over there that is as good
as the Runnin’ Reptiles.”

At least once more before you graduate.
We’re sorry we had to use the "T" word right before finals, but now that
you’re going to graduate, applying what you’ve learned is only logical. A smart
step would be to step into an Oldsmobile. Williamson Oldsmobile is offering
college graduates social GMAC financing on all new Oldsmobiles.
In addition, if you finance the car with GMAC your first payment
isn’t due for 90 days from date of purchase. No payment until July!
Also available are special $600 incentives for qualified first time buyers on
1989 Calais. All terms are subject to finance approval.

Kenny walker is tne nosers Dig
gun,” Clare said. Walker scored 14
points against the Runnin’ Reptiles.
A 6-foot-4, 230-pound sophomore
from Crane, Texas, Walker is a de
fensive lineman for the Nebraska
football team.
* ‘I really don’t know his status, but
we went through spring practice in
jury-free,” Clare said. “But he still
might have been banged around.”
Clare said starter Gerry Gdowski,
another member of the Comhusker
football team, probably won’t play
that much.
“I’m not sure he’s ready to play
basketball yet,” Clare said. ‘‘He
banged up an elbow pretty good.”
Chip Bahe, a junior from Fremont,
and Tim McCoy, a junior from Lin
coln, are unavailable because of in ju
ries sustained during spring practice,
Clare said.
‘‘We have a bunch of guys who
aren’t reidy to play because of spring
football,” Clare said. “So we really
won’t be at full strength.”
