Number of injuries is high this spring, Osborne says
By Steve Sipple
Staff Reporter__
Nebraska football coach Tom
Osborne said the number of injuries
this spring ‘ ‘ is on the high side,” and
the most telling blow could be to a
fourth-string defensive left tackle.
Osborne said redshirt freshman
Dave Jensen, an Omaha Creighton
rrep product, will undergo arthro
scopic surgery on his knee today and
might not be available in the fall. Of
all the injured Comhuskers, Osborne
said, Jensen may be the only one to
miss the fall season.
Jensen suffered a knee injury dur
ing last Wednesday’s scrimmage.
“They’ll scope Jensen,’’ Osborne
said after Monday’s practice at
Memorial Stadium. “If anything’s
tom, they’ll do reconstructive sur
gery.”
Osborne said he’s concerned that
Jensen may have suffered a tom ante
rior cruciate ligament in his knee.
“We’re hoping - knocking on
wood,-- that he doesn’t have any
thing,” Osborne said after running
his team through a full-pad workout
in Monday’s 90-degrce tempera
tures.
The team was particularly thin
Monday at the wingback position and
on the offensive line.
Wingbacks Richard Bell (thigh
injury) and Nate Turner (ankle),
listed at the top of last week’s depth
chart, were both in street clothes at
the workout. Turner is done for the
spring, Osborne said.
Split end Chip Bahc practiced, but
was limping on a sore ankle.
Among the missing on the offen
sive line were tackles Tom Punt
(foot) and Terry Eyman (knee strain).
Guard Bill Bobbora is out for the rest
of the spring with a knee injury.
With Saturday’s Red-White game
on the horizon, Nebraska still has
some questions to be answered,
Osborne said.
“We’re not where we need lobe,’’
he said. “We got some holes to fill.’’
banders: weekend losses to Cowboys discouraging
By Jerry Guenther
Suff Reporter
A weekend sweep by Oklahoma
Slate did not sit well with Nebraska
baseball coach John Sanders.
The Comhuskers dropped all four
games in the series at Stillwater,
Okla., as the nationally-rated Cow
boys took over sole possession of first
place in the Big Eight.
“It was discouraging,” Sanders
said. "We played well during the first
game, then didn’t close it out. After
that, the wheels fell off.”
In the opener Friday, Oklahoma
State rallied for three runs in the bot
tom of the eighth inning to post an 11 -
9 win. Saturday, the Cowboys
swept a doubleheader from Ne
braska 13-6 and 15-8 before conclud
ing the series Sunday with a 14-3
victory.
The tosses left Nebraska with a 20
21 record, which marks the first time
that a Huskcr team coached by Sand
ers has had a losing record this late in
the season.
“We competed hard, gave a good
effort and played well in spots,”
Sanders said, “but it didn’t add up to
a sound performance.
“Against a quality opponent,
those things happen.”
Though Sanders said the Huskcrs’
pndc was hurt, he is confident they
will bounce back.
‘We competed
hard, gave a
good effort and
played well in
spots, but it didn’t
add up to a sound
performance.'
-Sanders
Sanders said one consolation for
Nebraska is that it has already faced
Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, the
top two teams in the Big Eight.
The Huskcrs, who are 4-8 in the
conference, can still earn a confer
ence tournament birth by finishing in
the top four of the standings. They are
now sixth.
Sanders said a tournament birth is
possible considering the Huskcrs
were 5-7 last year against the same
three conference opponents ihe\
have already played this year — ycl
they still managed to qualify for the
tournament.
Another beneficial factor, Sanders
said, is that the Huskcrs will be at
home for eight of the twelve remain
ing conference games. They host
Missouri in a four-game scries this
weekend and Iowa Slate in another
four-game scries on May 13 and 14.
“I think the standings arc going to
be jumping around a bit in the next
few weeks,” Sanders said.
Considering all the adversity
Nebraska has experienced this sea
son, Sanders said it would be
“ironic” if Nebraska would qualify
lor the tournament and play well
during it.
Our main concern is just to play
as well as we can, and the final stand
ings will appear based on that ef
fort.'
