How about you?” H “Fine.” He pauses, then asksfil “So, cruisin’ for babes?” Not completely unexpected on R my part. I have come to the condu- B sion that whenever you are non- B specifically wandering around a B crowded place, everyone auto-B matically assumes that you areB§ cruisin’ for babes. “No, not really,” I say. “I'm just B sort of wandering around.” He gives me a sympathetic, I knowing look. “No luck, huh?” At this point, before I have a R j chance to re-deny anything, a 11 ! female acquaintance from 1 don’t I j know where or when walks by and 1 we accidentally make eye contact. R “Hello,” she says to me. She B doesn’t even know my name. 8 “1 li,” I answer. I don’t know her R name either. Suddenly I am being nudged rather firmly in the side, and I look back to find another knowing look from my friend, this time a dev ilish one. “All right man. Cruisin’ for babes. Yeah. Go get her, she’s yours. Kick some butt.” “Absolutely. In a minute. I’m still really enjoying talking to you." He is saying something else to me now, but I have shifted into small-talk conversational auto-pi lot, so that I can pursue all the annoying crap in my head. Why aren’t I cruisin’ for babes? Everyone seems to think I am, or should be. Is it a matter of severe social deviance that I am not relent lessly stalking the opposite sex during all waking moments? Am I throwing a big kink into the social fabric? If I decided to start cruisin’ for babes, how would I do it? What does it involve? Should 1 walk dif ferently? Should I stuff anything down my pants? What do I look for in a babe I would like to cruise? Do all girb qualify as babes? Which is more important, babe quality, or my personal success rate? Meanwhile, the conversation has hit a lull. My friend is just staring at me. I have probably said "absolutely” about seven or eight times in a row by now and appar ently he would like me to elabo rate. The problem is that I don’t know what we’re talking about now. ~ See BABES’ onl
