Swimming coach signs two recruits
* Nebraska women’s swimming coach Ray Huppcrt announced
Wednesday that he has signed two recruits to nationaileuers of intent.
Huppert said he is very excited about signing Michelle Butcher, a
freestyler from San Diego and Chris Fredrick, a sprint-free styler from
Hartford, Wig., because both athletes have the potential to have a big
impact on the Nebraska program. V
Huppert said Fredrick will give Nebraska a lot of depth in the
freestyle events. He said Fredrick specializes in the 50-. 100- and 200
yard freestyles, and also competes in the 100 butterfly.
Fredrick finished 4th in the 50 freestyle at this yearns junior national
competition with a, time of 23.81. That time is the 5th fastest on
Nebraska’s depth chart, Huppert said.
‘ ‘Chris is very talented,* * Huppert said. * * She’s got a lot of quality. ’ ’
Huppert said Butcher is also a quality performer, as she is the 3rd
fastest high school freestyler in the country. The fastest is Janet Evans,
. who earned a gold medal at last year’s Olympic Games in Seoul, South
Korea.
Butcher finished 7th in the 1,650 freestyle at this year’s senior
national competition with a time of 16:24.9, and finished 12th in the
1,000 freestyle in 9:54. She also recorded a 16th-place finish in the 500
freestyle with a time of 4:52.9. Her fastest time in the 500 freestyle is

elle is a very talented young lady.”
Huppert said heplans on signing three or four more recruits. He said
one recruit he doesn’t expect to sign is Evans, who is reportedly
considering Texas, Stanford, Arizona and UCLA.
Huppert said he sent a questionnaire, to Evans’ coach in Fullerton,
CalifTbuidid not receive a reply. He said he was not surprised when he
did not receive a response.
“Janet made it known very early what four schools she was consid
ering,” Huppert said. “To be honest with you, I think she’s leaning
towards Stanford.”
Fun run to benefit heart association
Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Coors Light will team up to sponsor an
i American Heart Association fun run on April 29,
The run will begin at the Coors Distributing Company in Omaha and
will end at the SAE house on the University of Neoraska-Lincoln
campus. The run will begin at 8:30 a.m„ ahd will end around4:30 p.m.
(Frank Marsh, the Nebraska treasurer, will present a check to the
American Heart Association at the conclusion of the run.
