Both Japanese musicians steal the show UKAKOTO from Page 9 r^ectionsTAn extended drum solo lemed like it would never end, but £esc problems were sporadic. Boclc displayed some interesting hass work right before the intermis S -- it slowed the pace down con iderably, but was still worth it. Gen erally the group blended the four in struments nicely. AH four are ‘alented individuals, but the two Japanese were the real stars of the show. After the intermission, Ozone played a solo piece that almost sounded improvised. A mix of styles and difficult changes in time signa tures made for some rough moments, but Ozone displayed a lot of talent. The piece, written by Ozone, had some amazing serges between classi cal, Latin beat and jazz sounds -- sometimes it didn’t work, but when it did, it was incredible. Perhaps one of the most beautiful works in the program was “Fisher man’s Song,’’ written by Okoshi. “Imagine it’s four or five in the _moniing1and the little fishing boats are coming in,” Okoshi said about the piece. Truly, it was a very pretty, calm, easy sort of ballad — music to fall in love with. Another very good moment in the show was a duct between trumpet and piano. The two musicians worked very well together, and at the end, Ozone plucked the piano strings; a nice ending to an elegant ballad. The quartet sounded a little more experimental than the sounds drifting out of the typical jazz bar at midnight, but it was just as vital and exciting. Ozone is obviously gifted; in a few years, he may be one of the best jazz musicians in America and the world. FQRjALE Furniture oed and living. CHEAPI 435-0057.
