here. He went on to become a
national champion.”
Rodrigue/, a seven-time All
American, is the top all-around gym
nast in the country with a 57.45 aver
age. He finished 1st in the pommel
horse compe'ition at last year’s
NCAA championships and was the
runner-up in the all around.
Rubio is a five-time All-Ameri
can. He won the all-around and hori
zontal bar titles at last year’s champi
onships.
Trailing Houston Baptist is 2nd
ranked UCLA. The Bruins, who have
a 280.75 team average, arc led by
David St. Pierre.
St. Pierre is ranked 3rd in the all
around (56.99), pommel horse (9.75)
and vault (9.58), and 4th in the high
bar (9.8).
UCLA coach Art Shurlock said
experience will benefit his team.
“We have an interesting team.
Our strength is in our three seniors
(St. Pierre, Michael Chaplin, and
Curtis Holdsworth),” he said. “Our
intensity is up right now.”
UCLA enters the meet with a 28-6
record, with two of those losses oc
curring against Illinois and Nebraska
at the UCLA/Times Invitational on
Feb. 11.
Illinois finished with a 7-1 dual
meet record and a No. 3 ranking. Its
lone loss came against Houston Bap
tist.
But Illinois coach Yoshi Hayasaki
is not making any predictions about
the outcome of this year’s meet. Last
year, Hayasaki said that Nebraska
would beat top-ranked Illinois, a
prediction which became reality
when the Huskers captured the
NCAA title.
. “We were ranked No. 1 last year
and 1 made a bad prediction,”
Hayasaki said. “We have six seniors
out of the nine guys on the team.
We’re prepared to compete twice,
both Thursday and Friday.
“We just want them to perform
the way they can perform. Unlike last
year, the guys know what to expect.
We’ll be more confident.”
Illinois is led by David Zeddics,
who is ranked 3rd in the all-around
(57.07).
First-year Illinois coach Peter
Kormann said depth has helped his
team.
“We’ve had a pretty good year
considering I was new. We only had
a few competitions where we weren’t
up to par,” Kormann said. “Our fifth
and sixth gymnasts arc as good as our
third and fourth, which is what makes
us so good.”
Ohio Stale has relied on strong
contributions from Mike Racanclli
and Gil Pinto to compile an 11-0
record this season.
Stanford Coach Sadao Hamada
said talented gymnasts, like Pinto
and Racanelli, will mean a wide
open meet.

will face the school’s top athletes in a

events, Turner’s group will counsel
students about drugs.
Included among Turner’s group
will be former professional boxer
Ernie Shavers, ex-NFL defensive end
Joe Jackson, ex-Husker middle guard
Lawrence Pete, ex-Husker quarter
back Craig Sundberg and former
Husker lineman Stan Parker, among
others.
Turner also will conduct three
anti-drug clinics that will be free of
charge. The first will be April 19 at 7
p.m. at Omaha’s Lewis & Clark Jun
ior High School. That will be fol
lowed by two clinics on April 23 at
the South Stadium Auditorium, one
at 3 p.m., the other at 7 p.m.
Turner said the two-hour clinics
are designed to educate and instruct
parents, teachers and coaches with
the latest information on why drugs
are so attractive and so addictive, and
what can be done to keep them out of
I homes and schools.
