Weather is negative factor for Huskers By Steve Sipple Stiff Reporter___ (vfiiors aFlhc 53rd Masters golf tournament weren’t the only ones bothered by cold, wind and rain last weekend. , ' The Nebraska men sgoll team also eot a dose of unfavorable weather at the Stouffcr/Vandcrbilt Invitational m Nashville, Tcnn., where it finished 13th out of 18 teams. Nashville’s weekend weather compared to that in Augusta, Ga., where the Masters’ third round on Saturday was delayed to Sunday. “The weather (in Nashville) wasn't very good,” Nebraska coach Larr\ Romjuc said. ‘‘Whenever the weather’s bad, it helps the teams that have been playing a lot -- and we haven’t.” Cold temperatures have kept Ne braska from practicing during much 0 lhc season. Meanwhile, teams in warm-weather states like Miami Alabama, Tennessee, Central Florida and Stanford have practiced. And those were the top five teams at this weekend’s meet. Miami, led by David Postlcwaitc’s lst-placc finish, won the meet, cover ing Hermitage on the Cumberland golf course in 880 strokes. Postle waitc shot a 214 over 54 holes. “Miami isn’t going to shoot differ ently than they did in any condi tions,” Romjuc said. “They’d shoot an 880 in any conditions. (The weather) hurt us more because we haven’t been playing as much golf.” Nebraska shot a 918. The Huskers were led by senior John Dinncbicr. w ho c arded a 224, inc lud ing a 2- under par 70 in the final round. Dinnebier’s 54-hole total was a season-low among Nebraska team members this year, and his final round was the first sub par total by a Huskcr this year. The rest of the Huskers struggled, Romjuc said. “Our scores were too high,” he said. “We only had one good round during the whole tournament (Din ncbicr’s 70). The rest of our scores were very average.” The Huskers’ Mike Rack shot a 230, Mike Troy had a 232, Kurt Gcr stner a 233 and Jeff Rafferty a 237. Dinnebier’s total was good for about 25th place at the tournament, Romjuc said. 'Whenever the weather's bad, it helps the teams that have been playing a lot - and we haven’t --Romjue Nebraska finished 4th at last sea son’s Stouffer/Vanderbilt Invita tional, which was held three weeks earlier lhan this year’s meet. The Huskers’ scores should improve a lot with three weeks of constant practice, Romjue said. Lincoln’s weather will have to become warmer for that to happen, he said. “There’s no question. It’s the same old story - (Nebraska's) geog raphy works against us,” Romjue said. “You just have to accept it, work hard and keep pointing toward the Big Eight season.” The Big Eight Championships will be May 15 and 16 in Tulsa, Okla. Nebraska’s golfers have to avoid becoming too discouraged by the weather, Romjue said. “That’s a part of golf up here,” Romjue said, “but it really hurts their performances.” Haase iirst victim of spring football practice By Steve Sipple Staff Reporter Nebraska’s first major injury of spring football practice occurred dur ing Saturday’s scrimmage but wasn’t discovered until Monday. Cornhusker quarterback Tom Haase apparently broke his arm Satur day when he fell on his elbow. Haase, a sophomore who was sharing third team duties with Keithen McCant on the second spring depth chart, prac ticed briefly Monday and complained of soreness in his left arm, Nebraska trainer George Sullivan said Tuesday. X-rays taken Monday night showed the break, Sullivan said. Haase, who throws with his right arm, will have surgery on the arm today. He should be 1()0 percent by August, Sullivan said. tight other Huskers skipped Tues day’s workout at Memorial Stadium because of class or injury. Those out included linebacker Chris Caliendo (class), wingbacks Richard Bell (ankle, toe) and Nate Turner (quad ricep muscle), tight end William Washington (pulled groin), running back Ken Clark (sore groin), fullbacks Sam Schmidt and Bryan Carpenter (class) and middle guard Mike Mur ray (pectoral muscle). Nebraska coach Tom Osborne said the Huskers played sluggish during Tuesday’s full-padded practice on the artificial turf. “Practice dragged a little bit to day. It’s understandable, but disap pointing,” he said. Behind In Studies? Finish the semester with the grade you hoped to obtain at the beginning.
