    Jernigan gets two homers
Huskers sweep Wayne State 14 - 0,15 -1
By Jerry Guenther
Staff Reporter
For Nebraska first baseman
Frankie Jcmigan, being third has its
advantages.
Jcmigan, who batted third in the
lineup, homcrcd in both games of a
double header Wednesday as the
Nebraska baseball team swept Wayne
State 14-0 and 15-1.
The 5-fooi-10, 195-pound fresh
man from Muncie, Ind., walked
twice, scored four runs and had five
RBIs overall against Wayne State.
Batting third helped, Jcmigan said,
because opposing pitchers throw him
a lot of fast balls to avoid pitching to
clean-up hitter Bobby Benjamin.
“If I’m not hitting the ball like I’m
supposed to, it makes it tough on (the
rest of the line up),” Jemigan, said.
Jemigan, who got his first home
run of the season Saturday against
Oklahoma, said he wasn’t going for
the home runs against Wayne State.
“I was just swinging, trying to get
the head of the bat on the ball,” Jcrni
gan said.
Because college pitchers throw
faster than in high school, Jernigan
said he struggled earlier in the season.
But now, he said, he thinks he has
made the adjustment.
“I’m seeing the ball very well right
now.”
Nebraska baseball coach John
Sanders said he decided to move Jcr
nigan into the starting line up earlier
in the season when Nebraska was
struggling offensively.

“Frankie has shown us that he’s
always prepared (to play),” Sanders
said. “When he’s been given the
chance,he’s produced.”
Sanders said Jemigan is a mature
hitter for a freshman because he
doesn’t strike out a lot and doesn’t
swing at many bad pitches.
“He knows that as long as he gets
on base, he’ll have a spot in the start
ing line up,” Sanders said.
But it didn’t matter who was in the
starting line up Wednesday.
The Huskers collected 30 hits and
20 walks against the Wildcats, using
at least 17 players during each game.
Ken Ramos led the Huskers with
six hits, while Ken Sirak had five hits
and Benjamin had four hits.
Benjamin, who set a Nebraska
record with 21 home runs last season,
homcred and doubled twice against
Wayne State.
On the mound, Tim Smith, 2-1,
and Jerry Madison, 1-1, were the
winning pitchers for the Huskers.
Sanders said he was pleased by
both the Huskers’ pitching and offen
sive production against Wayne State.
“I thought we improved signifi
cantly since the first time we played
them,” he said.
The Huskers opened the season
this year against Wayne State, beating
the Wildcats in a double header 7-0
and 11-4.
Today Nebraska, 17-13, travels to
Wichita State to play the Shockers in
a 7 p.m. game. Wichita State, 34-5, is
ranked fifth by Baseball America and
sixth by Collegiate Baseball.
Pat Leinen, 3-2, is scheduled to be
the starting pitcher for Nebraska.
