    Husker women earn national-qualifying times
PEPIN From Page 6_
middle distance runner Yvonne van
dor Kolk, who is injured, and All
American l.inctta Wilson, who had
ROTC duties last weekend.
Pepin also said long jumper Kim
Guthrie was injured during the
meet’s long jump competition.
Pepin said the Husker women,
who have won-nine consecutive out
door and 10 consecutive indoor Big
Bight titles, were beaten by a good
icam iram me Atlantic Coast Confer
ence. North Carolina claimed its sec
ond consecutive ACC indoor title this
season.
“We were not very aware of what
North Carolina had as a team,” he
said. “They were good. They have
one of the belter teams in the coun
ty-”
I he Nebraska women claimed
three event titles in national-qualify
ing times. The highlight of the meet
occurred when senior Sammic Rcsh
recorded a schtx)! record cn route to
winning the 5,000-meter run in 16:17
minutes.
“It’s very unusual in a race of that
distance that someone run that fast all
by themself, because she was essen
tially all by herself,” Pepin said.
Also winning for the women were
Renita Robinson in the triple jump
with a leap of 42 feet, 2 inches, and
Nora Rockenbauer in the javelin with
distance of 176-4.
Nebraska won seven events in the
men’s competition, including a pair
of victories bv Dieudonne’ Kwizera.
Kwizera, who Pepin said was
questionable because of an ankle in
jury, won the 800 in 1:49.95 and the
1,500 in 3:46.38.
“Kwizeradoubling in the 800and
1,500 was really pleasing, because
with his ankle injury we had real
doubts,” Pepin said.
Nebraska also picked up wins
from Kevin Coleman in the shot put,
Grant Ralhman in the high jump and
Jeff H<x>pcr in the discus.
In addition, Dwight Mitchell
claimed the triple jump with a jump
of 49-8 1/2 and Dale Burrage won the
4(X) hurdles with a time of 51.27.
Pepin said Burrage’s performance
in the hurdles was a plus.
“It was real good to see Dale
Burrage win the 400 hurdles,’’ he
said. “A year ago on this same day he
won at the Texas Relays. He’s real
important to us and it was good to see
that.”
