I l Pptersen thanks high school administrators By Brandon Loomis Senior Reporter-— AS UN President Jeff Petersen thanked Nebraska’s high school counselors and faculty members Tuesday for their dedication and lor his personal success in college. Petersen was guest speaker at the state high school Principal-Coun selor Conference in the Nebraska Union Ballroom. About 450 high school administrators and counselors attended. . . ; Petersen said he avoided home-_ work in high school and consequently his grades suffered. During his senior year he said, a teacher and later a counselor told him how much poten tial he had and urged him to fulfill it. During his first semester at the University of Ncbraska-Lincoln, he said, he took his teacher’s advice and earned a 3.8 grade point average. “I was finally living up to my potential,” he said. Petersen said he ‘‘vividly re membered his teacher’s encourage ment when he won the student clcc reiersen saw school counselors also influenced him in his decision tl attend UNL. He had wanted to attend an expensive school somewhere on the East Coast, he said, but counsel ors helped him make the right choice Because of its diverse opportuni' tics and relatively low cost, Petersen said, UNL is “not just a good place to get an education, but a great place to learn about life.” Petersen said if anyone would have asked him in high school how important guidance counselors were he probably would have said, “really about as much as my next door neigh bor’s dog,” 6 But having seen their predictions come true and their words put to use he said, he has changed his mind. ’ “On behalf of all the students at the university . . . thank you,” Pe. tersen told the counselors. ‘‘Eachand every one of you has planted a seed in each and every student you’ve worked with... And 1 assure you the, seed is growing.” I Netjraskan The Daily Nebraskan) USPS 144-080) is published by the UNL Publications Board, Ne braska Union 34, 1400 R St., Lincoln, NE, Monday through Fnday during the academic year; weekly during summer sessions Readers are encouraged to submit story ideas and comments to the Daily Nebraskan by phoning 472-1763 between 9 a m.and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday The public also has access to the Publications Board For information, contact Tom Macy. 475-9868 Subscription price is $45 for one year.
