INU basketball recruit to undergo shoulder surgery ly Steve Sipple K„ff Reporter_ ff-cgSrSTa basketball recruit Bruce th .Kick’s shoulder injury probably fton’t affect his career as a Corn ■ But Chubick, a two-time All-State ■selection from Atkinson West Holt, ■said his dislocated shoulder occurred ■al Chubick injured his right shoulder ■while diving for a ball during Atkin |son West Holt’s final regular-season game Atkinson West Holt, the s No-. ;rated Class C-l team at the Ume, still managed to advance to the district final before losing 51-50 School^ Cr66k 31 N°rf0,k High That loss cost West Holt, which 21'Ulhc chancc 10 defend its 1988 Class C-l state title. Chubick played against Battle Creek despite his injury, but he said West Holt’s fate may have been different had he been healthy. “The injury, really couldn’t have come at a worse time,” Chubick said. I don’t know if we would have won state, but we should have got there. I was about 60-percent healthy in the disfrict final. I couldn’t play well inside — I didn’t have any strength.” Chubick still scored 31 points. He said teams normally double- and triple-team him, but Battle Creek didn’t Chubick will undergo surgery March 28, said Bruce Chubick Sr., Atkinson-West Holt’s boy’s basket ball coach. Chubick Sr., who coached his son in high school, said the surgery will be performed by Nebraska team phy sicians Dr. Tom Heiser and Dr. Pat Clare at St. Elizabeth Community Health Center in Lincoln. Chubick said his son’s rehabilitation period should be about three months. Three long months, Chubick Jr. said. “It’s like Larry Bird (of the Na •/ tional Basketball Association’s Bos ton Celtics) a few years back,” he said. ”He was deciding whether to have surgery on his bone spurs (in his heel). For him, there was no good time. “There’s no good time when you’re dedicated.” But Chubick Jr., a right-handed shooter, said he’ll play basketball during his rehabilitation period. “I’ll get the ball out and work with my left hand,” he said. [Lack or depth reared in offensive line, NU coach says TENOPIRFrom Page 14 guard spots and left tackle are unde cided entering spring drills. At right guard, Tenopir said Bill Bobbora, a 6-3 , 260-pound senior from Amarillo, Texas, goes into spring practice as the starter. But he will be pushed by Steve Engstrom, a junior from Lincoln Pius X High School. Steve’s a big, strong kid with a lot of athletic ability,” Tenopir said. Tenopir said Roschal will be given a chance to prove himself at right guard. Tom Punt is the leading candidate to win the starting job at left tackle, Tenopir said. Punt, a 6-8,270-pound junior from Sioux Center, Iowa, re dshirted in 1987 and played as a re serve last year. Terry Eyman, a 6-6, 265-pound junior from Omaha Bryan High School, goes into spring practice behind Punt, but has a chance to win the starting job, Tenopir said. Jim Wanek and Chris O’Gara v/ill be fighting for the starting left guard assignment. O’Gara, from Madison, Wis., switched to tight end last spring and played sparingly behind Todd Mil likan because of injuries. Tenopir said Wanek, a 6-foot jun ior from Aurora, will probably be the starter at tight end. “Wanek probably has the upper hand because he’s played a little last season,” Tenopir said. Another concern of Tenopir is depth. He said the Cornhuskers ^ tough schedule early last season didn’t give them time to develop depth. ‘‘We had a couple of tough games early on, so we didn’t get to play the second and third team as much,” he said. ‘‘Getting young kids playing time early in the year is critical to their development.” Tenopir said that’s the best thing about spring drills -- everybody gets a chance to play. ‘‘We at least want to come out of the spring with a solid two-deep at every position,” he said. ‘‘That just didn’t work out last year.” FOR SALE Bicycle* 1988 Specialized Stumpjumper MT bike, dick shift, $425, OBO.
