Music better than lyrics in country album
By Dave Van Derslice

Jonathan Edwards
The Natural Thing
MCA Records
Jonathan Edwards’ latest album,
“The Natural Thing,” has a combi
nation of pop and country feel.
Co :
From the down-home “My
Baby’s A Country Song” to the
single “Look What We Made (When
We Made Love),” the contrast in
styles adds greatly to the album.
Country music is expanding - not
only in the music but also with many
new artists trying their hands in the
business.
Jonathan Edwards is one of these
new artists. Although this album
would be considered country by to
day’s standards, it leans toward the
new, pop-sounding country music.
Edwards started his career as a pop
singer, influenced by people such as
Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, James
Taylor, and Peter, Paul and Mary. His
sole smash as a pop singer was in
1971 with “Sunshine,” a single
which hit the top five on the pop
charts.
Emmylou Harris was the person
who “rescued” Edwards’ career.
Harris invited him to sing backup on
one of her albums. This led to another
record deal, and Edwards’ career
took off again.
Edwards’ roots seem deep in what
4 «
is probably the best song on the al
bum, “On God’s Green Earth.”
In this song he sings of how there
is “room for every color” on this
earth “from Birmingham to Johan
nesburg.” The main instrument on
the album, the piano, lets Edwards’
voice shine through. This song has
potential, because it was co-written
by Craig Bickhardt of S-K-B and Don
Schlitz, who wrote Randy Travis’
No. 1 song, “Deeper Than the Hol
ler.” “It’s Easy to Write a Love
Song,” co-written by Edwards, is a
snappy pop-style song which shows a
good vocal range. In this song, as well
as “Back Up Grinnin’” and “We
Need to be Locked Away,” Edwards
sounds like Lee Greenwood, with a
deep-throated tenor voice, upbeat
tempo and excellent background
» i 1
music.
The music for this entire album is
put together very well. The band in
cludeds some big names in the coun
try music world, including Craig
Bickhardt and Mac McAnally on
guitar, and Bickhardt, McAnally,
Michael Johnson and John Wesley
Ryles on background vocals.
The music is one of the strongest
pans of this album. It perfectly fits
the words Edwards sings.
In some songs, the lyrics seem to
be lacking something, though. In
“My Baby’s A Country Song,” the
fiddle and harmonica have very nice
lines, but the chorus is missing a few
words; it just leaves you hanging,
waiting for something that never
comes. This also appears in the Bick
hardt-written song, “Dime a Dance
1 *1 11 1
Romance, which misses someinmg
vocally.
Edwards released a video to
“Look What We Made (When We
Made Love),’ ’ which talks about kids
and how “in the middle of the night,
we really did something right.” His
new single is the title song, which,
like a typical country song, talks
about how love is “The Natural
Thing.”
Even though Edwards has been
recording for almost 20 years, he has
some potential in country music.
With a little bit of work and some
vocal improvements, Edwards may
one day be as common as Randy
Travis or Reba McEntire. And it
looks as if Edwards is going to be
around for awhile.

ANGELS From Page 6
although my family will say it ruined
it.
But think about it -- “Charlie’s
Angels’’ was a pretty original show.
A group of female detectives who
work for the never-seen Charles
Townsend (Although I figured out
that Charlie’s voice was done by John
Forsythe, after watching Dynasty --
another ABC hit).
Once the ABC crime drama was a
weekly series in the fall of 1976, my
friends and I would eat, drink and
sleep the show through the remains of
our elementary school years.
Kathy, Mary (the two brunettes)
and 1 would prance around the play
ground, claiming that we were detec
tives for the never-seen Charlie
Townsend.
And once the Charlie’s Angels
bubble-gum cards came out, there
went the allowance.
Every Saturday it was to the drug
store to get first picks at the new

cards. There was something great
about those cards, maybe it was the
corny caption at the bottom, or
maybe it was the challenge of collect
ing all the right cards so that you
could turn those cards over and piece
together the puzzle.
Once in a while it would get tire
some, because the gum in the pack
age was usually lethal and in the later
years, the company that manufac
tured them started to sneak in a lot of
Bosley cards.
Oh God, remember Bosley (David
Doyle)? I think he’s giving voice
lessons to Cory Feldman.
Probably the pinnacle of all this
C.A. stuff was Christmas, 1977.
Santa Claus delivered a Jaclyn Smith
doll. I wanted to laugh, I wanted to
cry, my brother wanted to tear her
head off. In fact, I think he did.
She was absolutely beautiful, but
she was a medium sized doll so my
other Barbie clothes didn’t fit her.
Darn it.
This was the climax of C.A. wor
ship, because after this season, the
trio would “break up.” Kris Monroe,
played by (Cheryl Ladd) replaced Jill
(Fawcett) after the 1976-77 season.
Apparently Jill had to pursue her
racing career in Europe,
And then the domino effect.
Sabrina left to get married after
the 1978-79 season. And then Tiffany
Wells, played by Shelley Hack, came
on the scene.
Old Tiff was a yawner on the
screen, so Julie Rogers (Tanya
Roberts) was the final replacement.
Kelly (Smith) was the only one
who stuck it out and I had zits.
Hey, wait this wasn’t supposed to
happen. I was one of those perfect
girls, but in five years a lot had
changed. 1 had lost faith and interest
by the lime Shelley Hack hit the
scene in the 1979-80 season.
By now, the cards were becoming
too expensive to collect multitudes of
each character and I wasn’t allowed
on the playground anymore. Besides,
I wanted to spend my money on
cooler things like the Grease album.
Perhaps it was trendy, but it was
during five of the most important
formative years of my life.
And it just goes to show you that
television doesn’t necessarily affect
your life. I’m not quite perfect.
