Jelks said there won’t be any picture uii mm because he isn’t favored to win the men’s portion of the 200-meter . . dash. He said that J©IKS anonymity could work in his favor at the meet, which will be held today and Saturday at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis. “At meets here I feel pressured to do weli for my friends as well as for myself,’* Jelks said. “But at away meets no one knows who you are and it doesn’t matter as much. I won’t be excited until the gun goes off.’’ Jelks said his goal entering the meet is to earn All-America honors by finishing among the top six com petitors. He said that task will not be easy because an injured Achilles ten don has prevented him from running hard for two weeks. Jelks said he knows the competi tion at the NCAA’s will be tough. Jelks said no other meet compares to the NCAA championships. “After competing in big meets like the NCAA championships and (facing) the competition there, all other ones are riff-raff meets,” he said. Jelks said Nebraska’s last two major meets, the Big Eight champi onships and the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, left him upset because he’s never lost in two meets in a row. He finished second to Drake’s Steve Little in the 200-mcter dash at the Husker Invitational, and finished fourth at the conference championships. “I expect to win even when I’m hurt,” Jelks said, “I expect to win every lime I touch the track. When I don’t, I always feci there’s something I could’ve done.” He said his loss to Little was also upsetting. “He’s never beaten me before,” Jelks said. Jelks said his preparations for the Big Eight championships were hin dered by his injury. He said the injury didn’t allow him to walk until two days before the meet. Although the pain worsened dur ing the finals, Jelks said, obligations kept him going. He said his parents presence was also influential. ‘‘I didn’t want to quit because it was the Big Eight and I couldn’t let the rest of the team down,” Jelks said, “plus my parents were there.” Jelks said a lot of people figured he had a bad day at the Big Eight cham pionships because they didn’t know he was hurt. He said he felt better after a talk with his parents. “They told me that getting fourth place in my condition was good,” he said. “If I’d been healthy, results would’ve been different.” COLOR WALLET PHOTOS FROM YOUR PICTURE 8 FOR $2.50 ON SALEJNMARCH INSTANT PASSPORT PHOTOS home¥o^estovTdeo;tape 1 ENLARGEMENTS ONE HOUR PRINTING AND PROCESSING I CENTRUM PLAZA [ 11TH AT O STREETS | NU defeats Northern Iowa HUSKERS from Page 8 said he was pleased by Smith’s pitch ing. ‘‘I think he had some anxiety pitching the first time for Nebraska,” Sanders said. ‘‘But he settled down and pitched well in spots_He’ll do a fine job for us.” Sanders also said Doug Tegtmeier pitched strong in the second game. Tegtmeier pitched six innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out four and walk ing two. The game was called because of darkness after six innings. Tegtmeier said he was satisfied with his performance, considering it was the first time he had ever pitched that long. Offensively, Ramos led the Husk ers going 4 for 4 in the second game, including two RBIs. Sanders said the wins, which raised Nebraska’s record to 4-0, should help the team’s confidence going into the next game against na tionally-rated Arkansas Sunday. Sanders said he was especially pleased that so many players were able to get into the game. “It takes away a little bit of the rhythm and continuity when you do that, but it likewise provides an op portunity for evaluation and gives more people an opportunity to evolve themselves,” he said.
