SLUMBR decides to change to serious platform, support minority groups By hve Nations Staff Reporter The presidential candidate for the SLUMBR party announced Thurs day that he is changing the ASUN party’s platform from a joke party to a more serious one. Presidential candidate for SLUMBR, Trevor McArthur, said he decided to run a serious campaign because he realized his playful scorn for issues had turned into real scorn. ‘ ‘When I asked people for things I could make fun of, I realized that a lot of things that were funny also were real problems,” he said. Also contributing to his decision, McArthur said, was the fact that his party is the only one with “leftist” views. One change in the new platform, he said, is support for minority groups such as the Committee Offering Les bian and Gay Events. “We support things that other parties wouldn’t, like COL AGE,’ ’ he said ‘ ‘We are jumping in to fill a void in ASUN by supporting the minority groups on campus. “I’m calling to the left to organ ize, calling to minorities to support each other. “If we get elected, we’ll help work with minorities and help them fight for the issues,’’ he said. “We need minority groups to be able to look beyond themselves and help each other.’’ The SLUMBR party has dropped some issues in its platform, like nap times for students and 3-D glasses for people eating at Burger King. How ever, candidates have voiced con cerns about other campus problems, such as services that write term pa pers for students, McArthur said. “There must be something ASUN can do about this issue," McArthur said. “People arc just buying A’s." Other issues included in the SLUMBR party’s new platform are: • support for incorporating Kear ney State College into the University of Nebraska system. • striving to improve the distribu tion and amount of financial aid available for students, especially minority students. •placing another ASUN office on East Campus. While SLUMBR’s platform has taken on a serious tone, it still intends on keeping some joke issues, such as building a monorail between the two campuses and the parking areas. 0>>' This coupon is worth lo# % !’*£* $20.00 Nv| I ” on your 1st and 2nd plasma donations (within 6 days). s' ■ Earn cash while you study. RHA adviser Shari Klippenstein said last week’s decision was against RH A’s constitution. According to the constitution, all members of RHA must represent a residence hall. Klippenstein said the division of university housing does not consider International House, a living unit designed for international students, to be a separate residence hall. “(International) House is actually two floors within a hall,’’ she said. “Just because it’s called ‘house’ doesn’t mean it’s one.” Since International House is con sidered part of the Neihardt Hall government, it is a special interest floor. Giving it RHA representation would set a bad precedent, she said. “If RHA allows a special interest floor to be represented, then there will be no way to stop any floor that wants to from becoming independ ent,” she said. “You could have every individual floor sitting (on RHA).” Mippenstein said me bill could eventually destroy RHA’s system of local complex governments. There would be no purpose for them, she said. After Klippenstein spoke, the senators voted to suspend the rules and reverse last week’s decision. No one voiced opposition to the reversal. Thursday was the final meeting for RHA this year. RHA members encouraged all residence hall students to vote in - RHA's upcoming election, to be held Wednesday. According to a different survey compiled by the U.S. Department of Labor, none of the fastest declining careers requires a college degree, Kouth said. These include railroad conductors, stenographers, directory assistance operators and industrial truck and tractor workers. Routh said that despite a drop in the number of farmers and farm workers, the demand for people, in the agricultural science field will in crease in the future. Technology is replacing many low-skilled workers, he said. Roulh said he thinks his office will receive more contact from people who have been out of school for 20 to 30 years and are looking for skilled training. These people must be helped, Routh said. “We must provide more resources to people in this changing world.” JlL NOW ON TAP m * W.C.'s Bar 1228 "P" OneTast^mc^ou'l^Drinl^^Di^ How to get through oollege with money to spare; 1.
