Gymnast: Audience will help NU
By Mike O’Malley
Staff Reporter
When the Nebraska women’s
gymnastics team faced UCLA earlier
this season, Comhusker coach Rich
Walton blamed his team’s loss on the
judging.
Now, Nebraska’s Laura Saviski
hopes the tables are turned.
Saviski said Nebraska will have a
definite advantage when it faces UCLA
and Michigan in the Masters Classic
Sunday at the Bob Devaney Sports
Center. The meet, which features free
admission for all University of Ne
braska-Lincoln students who present
their student identifications, begins
at 2 p.m.
The Huskers will prepare for the
meet by facing Iowa State on Friday.
That meet begins at 7 p.m. in Ames,
Iowa.
Saviski said Nebraska has not for
gotten what happened when it faced
UCLA earlier this season in Los
Angeles, Calif. Walton blasted the
judging following the Huskers’ 189.8
187.15 setback, saying it was incon
sistent.
But Saviski said the judging should
not hurt Nebraska this time because
the Huskers will be competing at home.
“Having the home crowd backing
the judges should help us out,’’ Sav
iski said. “Everybody is psyched for
the chance to go against UCLA again
and show them that we’re a belter
team.”
Saviski said Nebraska, 7-1, is con
fident about its chances against UCLA.
Nebraska’s Lisa McCrady said the
Huskers will be ready for the meet
because they have not competed since
they defeated Oklahoma and Mis
souri on Feb. 12. Nebraska outper
formed the Sooners and Tigers by
tallying 189.50 points, while Okla
homa finished 2nd with 185.55 and
Missouri was 3rd with 180.15.
“Our last meet was definitely a
positive one,” McCrady said. “We
have to build from that.”
McCrady said Nebraska can not
afford to fall against UCLA.
She said she hopes she can perform
at the same level this weekend that
she did against Oklahoma and Mis
souri. McCrady seta school record in
that meet by recording a 9.75 score in
the floor exercise.
McCrady said she was pleased with
her performance.
“It was nice that I could do it for
my team, not for me,” McCrady said.
“Thai’s what we need to do — slay
together as a team. 1 hat s wnai w t vc
stressed the last couple weeks. We
need to work as a team if we’re going
to nationals.”
Walton said he has been stressing
teamwork and consistency during
practice. He said Nebraska needs to
smooth out the various rough spots it
has been encountering.
“We’ve been trying to tind where
the problems are,” Walton said.
“We’re doing all right, but we need
more consistency.”
Walton said there has not been one
specific area that has been giving
Nebraska problems.
“We’ve been flip-flopping
around,” Walton said. “One meet
it’s one event, the next it’s another. If
we put four events together in one
meet, we ll go 190 or better. It’s just
a matter of time.” ______
Team captures
tournament title
The Nebraska women’s soc
cer team used strong play from
halfbacks Kris Meysenhurgand
Cathy Guerrero to capture the
team title at their own invita
tional last weekend at Cook
Pavilion.
Meysenburg scored three
goals - including Nebraska’s
only two against Iowa State -
and Guerrero added one to lead
the Comhuskers to the title.
Meysenburg and Guerrero were
joined by Kansas State’s Mo
and Gaby Hanek, Missouri’s
Jenny Tate, Wichita State's
Helena Viera, Iowa State’s Tutya
Brans and Colorado State’s Usa
LaCasse on the all-tournament
team.
