Nebraska wrestlers take down Gophers By Nick Hodge Senior Reporter The Nebraska wrestling team continued its dual meet hot streak Wednesday after edging Minnesota 21-17 Wednesday night at the Bob Dcvaney Sports Center. The Huskers have won eight of their last nine dual meets. Cornhuskcr coach Tim Neumann said he thinks his team is on “a roll” and hoped the victory is a confidence builder. ‘ This is a big w in, simply because they’re probably the third best Big Ten team,” Neumann said. “The Big Ten has been really coming on as far as their national rank. Plus, they wrestled tonight with their best pos sible line up. "They had both their national runnerups, all their rated guys — the whole bit,” Neumann said. “So, to beat their team at full strength and with us not quite at full strength was good.” Nebraska was not at full strength, with 118-pound Terry Cook and 134-pound Dave Droegemucller not competing against Minnesota because of injuries. The Gophers’ two most decisive victories came from former All Americans 118-pound Keith Nix and 177-pound Dave Dean. After the Gophers opened the match with Nix’s decision over Ne braska’s Jim Sanchez, Nebraska’s 126-pound Jason Kelbcr pinned Minnesota’s Scott Rohrcr in the first period to give the Huskcrs’ a 6-3 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Nebraska’s 134-pound Mike Hemann decisioncd the Gophers Jim Hamel, who entered the meet ranked No. 11 nationally, 4-3. Neumann said Hemann’s win was “huge.” A draw by 142-pound Layne Bill ings and a decision by 150-pound Paul Herrera pushed Nebraska’s lead to 14-5. Nebraska’s 158-pound Jeff Collvet and Gopher Gordy Morgan, ranked No. 7, battled to a draw. The Huskers’ 167-pound Scott Chcnowcth scored a takedown with 0:52 left in his match with Minne sota’s Marty Morgan to pull out a 4-3 decision and give Nebraska a 19-7 advantage. However, the Gophers got a tech nical fall from Dean overNebraska’s Cody Olson and a major decision from 190-pound Chris Short over Husker Tommy Robbins to make the score 19-16 heading into the heavy weight matchup. Although they were ahead, the Huskers needed a draw by heavy weight Sonny Manley to win. Manley held off Minnesota’s Jeff Balcom in a draw'. The Gophers had a point deducted for arguing with the official to finalize the scoring. The No. 14 ranked Huskers im proved their dual record to 11-5-2. Meanwhile, the No. 12 Gophers fell to 14-8.
