said the shorter, multiple-cake arrangements offer several decora
tive options. They’re also easier for bakers to deliver, she said.
‘They’re almost hazard-free,’’she said. "You don’t have to worry
about them tipping over like the tier cakes.”
Mettler said some couples string ribbon and silk or fresh flowers
between the cakes. Couples are becoming more creative in deco
rating their wedding cakes, she said.
"They’re getting away from the traditional bride and groom on
top of cake,” she said. "They’re going with blown glass and silk
decorations. We have a new (cake top) that has light bulbs and
sparkles.”
Rose Stil well, bakery case and candy supervisor for Dillard’s Bak
ery’, 13th and O streets, said the spread-out arrangements are in
j^——**^* creasing in popularity.
“Some still like the tiers," she said. “But some want the columns, fountains and the larger
spreads. It depends on what they want to spend.”
Prices at Mettler’s range from $25 for a simple two-layer cake to a $350 package that
includes the main cake, groom’s cake and sheet cakes, Mettler said. Dillard’s cakes range from
$10 to $125, depending on extravagance of the arrangement, Stilwell said.
Groom’s cakes are usually made of heavy fruitcakes, but couples have ordered cheesecake
lately, Mettler said.
For one recent wedding, Mettler’s used strudel and Baklava, a rich Greek desert, to I
complement the traditional wedding cake arrangement.
“A lot of the girls at the wedding saw that and are wanting to have it with their cakes," I
Mettler said.
Mettler said selecting a cake and its decorations is a major decision for a bride and groom.
“Some of the girls who come in here lake more time picking out an ornament than they
do the guy they’re marrying," she said.

with a second marriage when there
are children,” Johnston said.
Many times, he said, the children
want their engaged parent to draft a
pre-nuptial agreement to ensure the
inheritance or to ensure that their
parent doesn’t lose some assets in a
divorce.
Street agreed that most pre-nup
tial agreements are drafted by older
couples. She said most couples enter
the agreements to placate the fears of
cautious children, she said.
Despite their possible practical
ity, pre-nuptial agreements don’t
seem to be popular. Johnson said he
drafts two a year at most.
“It seems to still be the exception
rather than the rule,” Street said.
Johnston said couples who do
decide to take legal pre marital pre
cautions should heed two basic prin
ciples: Be truthful and disclose fully. ^
“Both the respective husband and
wife should fully disclose to the other
(one) all of their assets,” he said.
