OfficiakSystem not to blame for black plight
By Amy Edwards
Senior Editor
William Parker gave about 45
people a “lesson in black history”
Friday night at the Nebraska Union as
a part of Black History Month
Parker, vice chancellor for minor
ity affairs at the University of Ken
tucky, gave an account of the prob
lems in the black community and his
solutions for them.
Parker cited several reasons tor
the deterioration of the black family
most of which have taken place oniy
in the Iasi 20 years.
Ft rty-cighl percem of all prison
ers in America are black males, he
said, while blacks make up only H
percent ol society
In 1940 17 percent ol Mack fami
lies were run h> worn *n — todav, 4 .
percent of black lamines aie run b;
women. Parker san!
Ol all the blacks killed in the
United Stales, 98 percent arc killed
by other blacks and 61 percent of all
armed robberies are committed by
blacks, he said.
Parker also said there was an esti
mated 60 percent dropout rate for
blacks.
But Parker said blacks cannot
blame the svstem” for these prob
lems.
vSomc ol them exist Parker said,
because many people believe that
blacks are still in slavery.
“1 don’t really believe that we arc
in permanent slavery ,” Parker said
' 1 am not a descendcni of slavery, I
am a dependent of Africa that just
slopped >f| ;n slavery ‘
kausm soil exists, Parker said,
bui the solution to racism and other
problems the black community laces
is education
Parker defined tne slump in the
black community as being at
crossroad^ ”
We finally made n to the train
station and now we don’i know which
train to take. W’c re sitting there wag
ing for someone to pm us on the
train.”
But blacks can, and do, become
successful, Parker said.
He offered this formula for suc
cess: SC + SE2 + U - F = Success.
‘We finally made it
td the train station
and now we don't
know which train
to take.'
—Parker
SC is self-control, Parker said.
“You cannol allow anyone to
control your destiny and you cannol
hiairic anyone else for your failur
he -aid.
SL stands for sell-esteem. Ji is
needed to get back up al ter a failure.
L is you, in any situation that comes
Parker said.
A university is a bureaucracy -- a
prototype of the world, he said Stu
dents who survive it and adapt can
survive elsewhere, he said.
“College is designed to send you
name. Only the strong survive,”
Parker said.
F equals the fear of fate. To be
successful, people must be risk-tak
ers and not be afraid of what might
happen, he said.
“I do not encounter much racism
because I demand respect and I give
it, ' Parker said.
Responding to ques". irtcr his
speech, Parker said that all ;chools
should have a course in multicultural
lifestyles.
“The way the world is today, I
think students need 10 learn some
thing about other people '
