Beck says player was dismissed for ‘disciplinary action’ By Mike KJuck Staff Reporter __ Nebraska women’s basketball coach Angela Beck announced Sun day that senior guard Sabrina Brooks had beei. dismissed from the team. Brooks, a transfer from Moberly (Mo.) Junior College, started four games for Nebraska this season and averaged 11.2 points per contest In Nebraska’s 84-75 overtime loss to Missouri Jan. 29, Brooks led the Huskers with 26 points. Beck refused to comment on the incident but said Brooks’ dismissal was part of a disciplinary action. Brooks said after the Missouri game she went to Milwaukee, Wis., to attend the funeral of her boy in December. Brooks’ dismissal did not help Nebraska during its 82-79 overtime loss to Kansas Saturday at Allen Field House in Lawrence, Kan. The loss was the fifth consecutive conference setback for the Huskers. Beck said she wasn’t pleased with the loss even though Nebraska did show improvement “We probably put on one of our better performances,’’ Beck said. “Kansas made a very strong come back in the second half. I don’t want to sound like I’m satisfied with a loss but we played very hard and we shot well from the field and the free throw line.’’ Nebraska shot 48.2 percent from the field and connected on 18 of 22 free throws. The Huskers led 33-30 at halftime and were tied 70-70 at the end of regulation. Beck said she was especially pleased with the performance of sen ior guard Amy Stephens, who led the Hunkers with a career-high 37 points. Beck said Nebraska reevaluated its offense after suffering its setback to Iowa State. She said the new of fense is designed to get Stephens and senior center Kim Harris better shots. “We looked at the loss to Iowa State and determined we didn't get Amy Stephens enough quality shots,’’ Beck said. “Against Iowa State, Amy didn’t get many shots the first half and most of her shots for the game came in tire final three minutes when she was shooting from three point range. “We decided we are going to get Stephens and Harris to carry us on shooting and (sophomore Ann) Halsne to shoot,” she said. “Those guys are going to carry us. Amy did a great job of getting through several picks and had a great shooting night.” Beck said the close games Ne braska has played give her confi dence for the rest of the season. The Huskers will close out their regular season schedule by playing four of their last six games at home. The greatest margin of Nebraska’s last five losses was six points to Iowa State. The other four were three-point margins, except for Missouri which was a nine point deficit in overtime. K)RSALL___== 87 Chevy Spectrum. 2-Door. Black. Good Condition, New Tires. She said she re turned to Lincoln at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday night, 45 minutes before the start of Nebraska’s game against Iowa State. Brooks said she was in the restroom crying following Ne braska’s 70-64 loss to Iowa State on Wednesday when Beck asked to speak to her twice. Brooks said when she didn’t leave, an assistant coach told her she should go. Brooks then learned she was dismissed from the team on Thursday. “She (Beck) really doesn’t want to respect anybody,” Brooks said. “She wants us to respect her but she won’t respect us. It’s a lot to it.” Brooks said she will remain in school. She said she plans to graduate
