the number of fellowships for
minority students.
The plan will go into effect
immediately, Yost said. The
Feb. 15 application deadline for
graduate programs will not
apply to the minority graduate
recruitment plan, he said.
‘ T want to give academic de
partments as long as they need
to attract minority students,”
Yost said.
Yost began work on the plan
last August after being con
cerned about the low number of
minority graduate students at
UNL for several years, he said.
The plan probably wiU show a
greater change in recruitment
once it is more widely publi
cized next fall, he said.
“This goes beyond expres
sion of general concern. It is a
specific plan that will hopefully
bring us a more culturally di
verse student body at the gradu
ate level.”

Bills stop minors’ buying

State Sen. Carol McBride Pirsch
of Omaha opened a can of Kingsbury,
a near beer, and passed it around the
committee table during testimony in
favor of the bill. Pirsch said she
wanted to show senators that near
beer “looks, smells and tastes like
real beer.”
LB441 is actually a reinstatement
of an old law. Last spring, the Legis
lature changed several sections of the
Nebraska Liquor Control Act. One
change included removing from its
regulation any beverages which con
tained less than one-half of one per
cent alcohol. In doing so, the Legisla
ture inadvertently created a situation
in which minors could purchase near
beer, Hannibal said.
J. Michael Hughes, a representa
tive for Lincoln Package Beverage
Association, said that before near
beer was deregulated it was a “very
small seller.” He said he has heard of
stores where sales have quadrupled
since it was deregulated.
‘‘We didn’t anticipate the prob
lem that would crop up,” he said,
referring to the numbers of minors
buying near beer.
No one testified against LB441
and one person testified against
LB44Q, saying the bill’s penalties
were not strong enough.
