Student support keeps Abel pool open
By Jen Beals
Staff Reporter
Despite the findings of a rate
study, the Residence Hall Associa
tion voted to keep the pool in Abel
Hall open.
“The support for the pool was
overwhelming,” said Doug Breuer,
chairman of the residential enhance
ment committee.
Closing the pool was one option
presented to RHA members Thurs
day in a rate study to save students
money.
The Residential Enhancement
Committee and the University Hous
ing Division conducted the study to
propose the housing budget for the
1989-90 academic year, Breuer said.
RHA approved the rate study’s
proposed housing cost increases,
Breuer said.
The cost for double-occupancy
rooms w ill increase by 5.2 percent or
$120. Single-occupancy rooms will
increase by 6.2 percent or $ 170. This
increase is 1 percent smaller than last
year’s, he said.
Breuer said he brought up the idea
of closing the Abel pool because it
was losing money and because stu

denis were paying for other pools on
campus through student fees.
Presently, residence hall students
pay $6.52 per academic year to keep
the pool operating, Breuer said.
“We looked around town and
found that almost every pool loses
money,” he said. “The (RHA) Sen
ate just felt that we would keep it
open as a service to the residents.”
KHA Publicity Chairman Bill
Vobejda said some residents thought
that the RHA Senate would make a
sudden decision on closing the pool.
“We would consult the residents
first before we would actually close
the pool,” Vobejda said. “If any
thing, we probably would have
started a study to see if we should
look at dosing it in the future.”
Another part of the rate study in
cluded changing the residence hall
linen service. Breuer said linen will
be an optional service next year. Stu
dents who want linen service will
have to pay about $ 12 to $ 14 per year.
Breuer said linen was cut from the
budget because 40 percent of the stu
dents never use it.
“Linen will cost a few more dol
lars,” he said, “but I don’t think
people will be too concerned.”
RHA decided to increase housing
contract fees 50 cents from $5.50 to
$6 for next year, Breuer said. That
money goes to individual complex
governments to support entertain
ment, he said.
Vobejda said the 50 cents is not
part of the housing cost increase. He
said that RHA will receive 50 cents
more from the total housing budget
