Theaters attract
weekend crowds
for new movies
By Micki Haller

Movie theaters were busy last
weekcndbecause ot a combination of
new movies and returning students,
I theater managers said.
The area around 13 th and P streets
was particularly congested. The
Stuart Theater, the Douglas 3 and
Cinema 1 & 2 are all located near the
corner. Lines were apparent at all
three theaters at 7:15 p.m. Saturday.
Kent Knudsen, assistant manager
of the Stuart Theater, 13th and P
streets, said last weekend, especially
Saturday, was busy.
Although the movie showing at
the Stuart, “Wort ing Girl,’ ’ has been
there since Christmas Day, the show
drew 563 people for three shows on
Friday, and 1,083 people for five
Saturday shows, Knudsen said.
“I don’t know what accounts for
that,’’ Knudsen said about this week
end’s crowds.
In comparison, “A Fish Called
Wanda” drew 1,007 on the Saturday
of its opening weekend this summer,
he said.
As a result of the crowds, a movie
employee directed the crowds out
side the Stuart to the correct lines.
Knudsen said the Stuart has to make
sure it has enough staff to handle the
large audiences.
When a large audience is present,
the Stuart starts the movie a little late
so people can get concessions, he
said.
At the Douglas 3, “Mississippi
Burning,” “Beaches” and “The
Accidental Tourist” arc showing.
According to Pal Stahly, manager
of the Douglas 3, the movies’ novelty
may have something to do with the
long lines.
“All three arc new movies,” she
I said. 'We’ve been fairly busy. Satur
day pretty much sold out on a lot of
diem.”
