If thcircmploycr needs the student

obtaining another extension. The
graduate can get an H-l visa, for
temporary workers of distinguished
merit and ability, Wcndorff said.
The H-l can extend the stay for up
to another two years, and can be can

that. The visa cannot be extended for
longer than a total of five years, she
said.
Currently, Wcndorff said 88 for
eign students at UNL. have the H-l
visa and are working as professors or
doing research.
In May, when Datta gets his doc
torate and goes to Yale University for
practical experience, he will have to
change from an F-1 to an H-1 in order
to remain in the U.S.
‘‘Afterwards I will probably look
for a job here (in the United Slates),”
Datta said.

“There arc so many people in this
field (biochemistry), you have to
have more experience,” Datla said.
After the F-l, J-l and H-l visas
have run out, the graduates must re
turn to their country, apply for U.S.
citizenship or permanent residency if
they wish, Wendorff said.
Datla said he would rather apply
for permanent residency versus U.S.
citizenship because residency would
allow him to go to India whenever he
wanted. With citizenship, Datla said
he would have to travel like any other
citizen, which would be less conven
ient.
“I don’t know if my government
would like that anyway,” (if he
changed to U.S. citizenship,) he said.
Brendan Wong, a broadcast major
from Singapore, is graduating in May
and plans to remain in the United
Slates. He said he won’t have to worry
about applying for a new visa because
he will remain a student by going to
graduate school. He said he also plans
to get married in June loan American

University Nebraska Medical Center.
“I would like to go home,” he
said.“I don’t know if she (Wong’s fi

can we will probably go back (to Sin

Sorority reports
$3,000 in losses
By Chris Carroll
Staff Reporter
Losses totaling about $3,000 were
reported by Gamma Phi Beta sorority
members after a Thanksgiving break
in at the sorority house, according to
officials of the University of Nc
braska-Lincoln Police Department.
The burglary is the largest reported
at UNL in several years, said Lt. Ken
Caublc of the police department.
At this time, there arc no suspects,
he said.
Caublc said jewelry was the item
most frequently reported missing.
Stereo headsets, small amounts of
cash and one bicycle were other items
reported missing.
Caublc said that a faulty latch on
the kitchen window at the house
apparently made entry possible. Most
rooms, including bedrooms, had been
rummaged through by the burglars,
he said. One or two individuals proba
bly participated in the break-in,
Caublc said.
A maintenance man reported the
burglary at 11 a.m. Friday. The house
had been vacant since Nov. 22.
Police hope to locate certain items,
such as the bicycle, by utilizing the
serial number, he said.
Caublc said students should not
keep jewelry or cash in their campus
residences during the upcoming
Christmas vacation if they plan to be
gone. A letter addressing crime pre
vention will be sent to all sorority and
fraternity houses, Caublc said.
He said the UNL police will make
additional security chocks at sorority
and fraternity housesduring vacation.
