Visas mav change as graduation nears

Like most graduates of the Univer
sity of Ncbraska-Lincoln, Bansidhar
Datta will face greater responsibili
ties this May.
Like other foreign students who
decide to remain in the United States
after graduation, Datta must update
his visa in May.
Datta, a graduate student in chem
istry from India, will have to change
his visa so he can complete post
doctorate work in the United Suites.
According to Judy Wendorff, for
eign students adviser, Datta’s situ
ation is not unusual among lorcign
students. About 20 percent of all for
eign students who attend UN Lend up
staying in the United Slates, she said,

As of this fall, Wendorff said,
about 1,000 foreign students arc at
tending UNL.
These students must use one ol
three visas to stay in the United States
upon graduation.

1 visa is for students and can extend
the student’s stay for up to a year. The
J-1 visa, for visiting exchange profes
sors, research scholars and students,
