Nielsen talks to local audience about acting in ‘Naked Guns’ NIELSEN from Page 8 some acting school. Then you get up there and a stage always has an audience, and that’s the name ol the game.’ Nielsen said he thinks this is probably the first time a failed TV scries was turned into a movie. Of course, the track record of the pro ducers with the films “Airplane!,” “Top Se cret!” and recent smash “Ruthless People” helped, he said. Nielsen said the first six episodes of “Police Squad!” were all made as a part of a pilot for a regular weekly scries, but suffered from poor ratings. Each episode was played twice on ABC and then the scries was dropped. Turning back to the movie, Nielsen said there was some amount of improvisation on the set, but most of the present movie was already in the script. When he read the script for the first time during a airplane flight, he had to put it down because he was laughing so hard, he said. “But the imagination — and the creativity — that was at work there was really, really wonderful,” he said. Everyone was allowed tocontribule, includ ing the camera crew. “If it was funny, it would go in,” Nielsen said. Nielsen said he wasn’t worried about being stereotyped into a certain role. “Well, if that’s the case and that happens, then I don’t care, because if I can do this kind of stuff and have this fun that’s fine, but... I don’t think it’s going to stand in the way of doing other parts,” Nielsen said. Nielsen said someone once asked him what he th inks about being cast against type for these movies, since he usually plays distinguished, professional people. He said those roles are opposite of him, because he fits belter into the comic roles. The next morning, before heading to Omaha on his next stop for the movie’s promotional tour, Nielsen answered a few more questions about his work. Nielsen began his television career in 1950 on the livcdrainaseries“SludioOnc”on a show with Charlton Heston. That first year he was in 46 T V show sand earned on ly S5,000 the whole year. This was before strong unions and he said he knows the networks were taking advantage of actors in those early days. He also said the quality of broadcasts was different in those days. Shows were either good, or really terrible, because they took chances. We have reached, kind ol, shades of grey today, you don’t go to the ends ol the spectrum and taking a chance, and 1 guess it’s because there simply is too much money involved,” Nielsen said. In 1954, Nielsen went to Hollywood to star in a film at Paramount and alter that signed a contract at MGM. He liked working at the studio he called the “Tiffany’s of motion pic tures,’ but said that it was a dying giant burying its hand in the sand. The studio failed to realize the impact tele vision would have, Nielsen said. Although he has acted for many years, Nielsen said “Naked Gun” might once more bring him into greater prominence. .. vwwftswiTOWWWWWWWWW OOQOtfW Jti U U J<l uauoWH) I) JVK-SvS«W ‘As I say, I’m an actor. I’m a professional, and I know my craft, and I do it, and I do it well. ’ — Nielsen “I guess the phrase is that there’s a very strong possibility that it’s a whole new ball game ... I think comedy, for me now, is here to slay,” Nielsen said. But, while he hopes to do a lot more comedy, he also said he will do all sorts of roles. “As I say, I’m an actor. I’m a professional, and I know my craft, and I do it, and 1 do it well,” Nielsen said. According to Nielsen, it’s important in comedy to always stay outside and analyze. “There’s no coasting in comedy because, I believe, if you do something that’s funny, or when you think it’s funny, if you don’t hear the laughter, then you’re saying ‘oh-oh, what is happening?’ So you’re always on the alert, you’re always outside, so it becomes harder that way, because you can’t crawl in and have the comfort of that feeling that you can get in drama,” Nielsen said. Nielsen said this is the first such promo tional lour he has done for a movie, and he is enjoying it. “I enjoy meeting people, and silting down and talking and laughing. What else is there?” he said. “I’ve found in general that people arc easy going, and they treat you with respect and I treat them with respect,” Nielsen said. “I’m having a ball.” Earn $400-$600 I by Christmas 20 Positions Available Immediately We are looking for students with a sense I of style, with an energetic approach to opportunity in contacting our Fortune 500 clients nationwide customer base by phone. i contact Mr. Adams R Monday-Friday H 10 a.m.-9:00 p.m. fl at 476-7625 | Music makes Crossing Delancey a success , CROSSING from Page 8 l//y’s closest friends.
