I Elections ‘means for students to voice opinion’ I RECALL from Page 1 approving the letter also disturbed petitioners, Barufkin said. He ac cused some senators of being conde scending to students during the Nov. 2 senate meeting in which five stu dents spoke against the apology let ter, he said. Students were especially angered when Sen. Kristi Hunt of the College of Engineering told them they were “shit-out-of-luck” for not expressing their opposition to the apologicsdur mg the Oct. 26 meeting, when AS UN approved the letters. “That’s not proper conduct for a senator in a senate meeting,” Finley said. Finley said the students also were angered when the comments were excluded from the meeting’s min utes. It jusl shows that they’re trying to painta rosy picture and that all is good and well,” he said. Barufkin said he sensed that Pe tersen and senators didn’t want stu dents who opposed the letters to at tend the meetings. “They would probably have wanted us to leave if anything,” he said. Petersen denied that accusation. “I think his accusation that I don’t want people there is blatantly wrong,” Petersen said. “I wish more students would come.” Barufkin said the petitioners will gather signatures in the Nebraska Union, classrooms, residence halls and various food services. The group hopes to have all the signatures necessary by the end of the semester, Barufkin said. If it suc ceeds, recall elections would be held in January. ASUN holds its regular elections in March. Barufkin said he is confident the group can gather9,000 signatures and recall Petersen. According to the ASUN constitution, 33 percent of all full-time UNL students must sign a petition to recall the president. In contrast, both full- and Dart time students can vote in AS UN elec tions. Of those students, only 13 per cent voted in the last election. According to the Institutional Research and Planning office, 18,261 full-time students are enrolled at UNL. That means petitioners must collect 6,027 signatures to recall Pe tersen. To recall Gotschall, petitioner;; I" — — — — — JL. must gather signatures from 33 per cent of all full-time students enrolled in the College of Agriculture. Cur rently, 1,039 full-time students are enrolled in that college. It would take 343 signatures to initiate a recall elec tion. Finley said even if the group can’t expel Petersen and Gotschall, the petition drive will have served its purpose. “There’s a means for the students to voice their opinion, even if the recall isn’t successful,” he said.
