Physical Education
My first time tutoring was a night
to remember. My student was some
thing called Bone Crusher Reed, a.k.a.
Billy Jo, defensive tackle for the foot
ball team.
I had the shock of my life when
he answered his dorm room door.
He was about six foot seven...in .
diameter. And when he shook my
hand, 1 thought I'd never get it back.
So there I was, face-to-knee with
the big man on campus, wondering
how I was going to relate American
Literature to The Hulk.
But then he pulled out a can of
Orange Cappuccino. I was shocked!
Could it be that this tough jock
liked its delicate taste? And when
Bone Crusher brought out the bone
china, I was beyond belief
Reading the expression on my
face, he said,"What can 1 say? I like it.
The Cafe Erancais is pretty good,
too." Well, who's going to argue, I
thought. As we sipped our Orange
Cappuccino, I discovered that Billy Jo
loves reading novels; his only problem
was poetry. So I gave him tips on
reading Emily Dickinson, and he
gave me a copy of Ann Beattie's
^Tailing in Place."
Alii could think was, Dad’s never
going to believe this!

Oklahoma deteats
Widenhofer, Tigers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A
stunting defense motivated by the
future of Coach Woody Wid
enhofer’ s job wasn ’ t enough as Okla
homa posted a 16-7 victory against
Missouri on Saturday.
Quarterback Charles Thompson
led Oklahoma to three scoring drives
in the first half as the Sooners tuned up
for their showdown against Nebraska
by turning back the upset-minded
Tigers.
In other games, No. 14 Oklahoma
State blitzed Kansas 63-24, Iowa
State topped Kansas Slate 16-7 and
Nebraska beat Colorado 7-0.
“I knew they would take a lot of
gambles and make a lot of stunts,”
said Thompson. “You’re going to
have some success doing that. But 16
points happened to be enough today.”
Widenhofer didn’t get the upset he
needed as ammunitionto get his con
tract renewed and fell to 11-31-1 in
his four seasons, 2-7-1 and 1-5 this
season.
Heisman voters just can’t ignore
Barry Sanders.
The Oklahoma State back ran for
312 yards and became only the third
player in NCAA history to top 2,000
yards in a season.
“What Barry did is something we
can all share in,” said Coach Pat Jones
as his team went 7-2 and 4-2 with the
victory in Stillwater, Okla.
Sanders has 2,003 yards, beating
the Oklahoma State single-season
record of 1,877 established by Ernest
Anderson in 1982.
“I guess maybe it’ll hit me 20 years
down the road, but they're no big deal
right now,” said Sanders.
