Technology creates computer shortage

nology,” Gale said. “The operational
costs continue to go up and we don’t

meet these demands.”
Gale also said the computing re
source center’s existing hardware and
software is incomplete. He said the
memory requirement of the comput
ers is more demanding.
The performance cost ratio, he
said, is doubling every year. He said
student and faculty demands for
computer systems are rising faster
than the computer center can supply.
Gale said the center has a “limited
amount of resources” and tries to use
what it has to meet the students and
professor’s demands.
“This is not a new problem,” Gale
said. “Students arc always looking for
more advanced technology.”
Gale said the ongoing operational
costs for the computer systems are
high. He said most people aren’t
aware of theftc costs.
The base of the center’s funding
comes from the state, Gale said, but
the center is always applying for
grants.
“Most of the computers we have
purchased have been discounted from
vendors,” Gale said. “We have
worked this area very aggressively.”
Gale said that even though his
department has received grant money
for new computers, that money is not
dependable. Like any other univer
sity department, Gale said his depart
ment needs more money from the
university.
“There are a lot of things we would
like to do if we had the money, such as
a new facility,” Gale said. “But the
computer center isn’t the only thing
the Legislature has to worry about.
The computers arc just one small
piece in the university.”
He said the money the center re
ceives every year from the annual
budget already is spent. He said the
money the center receives is used to
pay for maintenance costs of the
computers, and is set aside for other
costs, which may occur later.
“The situation we are now in is
what you see is what you get for the
rest of the fiscal year,” Gale said.
