Book portrays life on family farms B> Micki Haller Senior Kditor “The Pelican in the Desert" is a collection of 14 short stories of farm families in the Midwest. bQQmiEw l While the book, edited by David Kubicek, captures some touching moments of Midwestern life, for the most part, the stories fail to arouse deep emotions or to create lasting memories. The book is grouped into five categories: Yesterday, Commu nity, Change, Isolation and To morrow. The title story is the only entry in the Yesterday column. “The Pelican in the Desert” is Abe Iver son . a man w hose w i is arc so rattled by a Kansan drought that he turns to the Old Testament. Author Dick Lane litters his story with apt folksy-isms. For instance, Charles has come back to the lamily, and Abe makes a back-handed comment during the dinnertime prayer. Ma did not appreciate it and she “gave the old man the same look she gave James that time he blew out the candles on the birthday cake with his mouth full of rough cut.” The drought progresses through the summer, and so does the old man’s sanity, until the author gives a surprise twist to the ending. The story seems long at times, mostly because Lane only gives the readers little hints and leads them on to build suspense. But the story is nice It has a real feel to it, and the ending is worth the excess build-up. Many of the stories are like this. They accurately paint a Midwest ern vision. In fact, many of the writers are farmers themselves, or have strong ties to the family farm. Kubicek said in his introduction that the book is a “celebration of a way of life as old as history. In the light of the current ‘farm crisis,’ some folks claim that the family farm is heading toward extinction. But I prefer to think that it is in transition; in order to survive, small farmers must adapt to new technology and new lifestyles.” The stories are about change, and about struggle. And like some fanners, some of the stories just can't wiihstand the conflict, and fall by the wayside. “The Blundering Christmas Angels"isan O. Henry esquestory that follows an old story line. Ex cessive sentimentality and a pal ending ruins the story. But as with any anthology, the good is mixed in w ith the bad. One of the best is “Dogs,” by Ted Kooser. Kooser tells the story of an inde pendent old man trapped on his farm with dogs that turn against him. The anthology is generally fair, and most Midwesterners will iden tify easily with its themes. Al though the book gives a warm glow to the reader, it just doesn’t have the spark to start a raging prairie fire. FOR SALE Hewlett Packard286 calculator, excelent condition.
