    Tubes give nostalgic concert

Senior Reporter
The Tubes have been around for
ages. But apparently good ol’ Fee
Waybill and the boys are not tired
of touring. It is easy to picture
boredom after all these years, but
based on their performance at
Omaha’s Raich Bowl Wednesday
night, they are not done terrorizing
audiences yet.
Vocalist/guitarist Waybill was
the focal point of the show with his
wit and charm. Also, the fact that he
sat in a chair onstage through the
entire show helped to contrast him
with the other band members.
Why did Waybill sit in a chair?
Well, he said he will never para
chute again, if that is any clue. And
judging from his stooped-over
hobble getting to and from the
dressing room, he probably
snouian l
But this is all insignificant. The
important point is that the Tubes
put on one of the more energetic
shows that the Ranch Bowl has
seen in a long time.
The audience consisted of
mostly college-aged, regular bar
going types, not over-aged punks
wanting to see a part of theirculture
history, which could be expected.
So, the Tubes may have had a
tough night ahead of them, had
they not rocked as hard as they
possibly could have.
After two or three songs, the
audience was mildly enthused But
after the veterans of punk/pop
cranked out a version of their
catchy smash She s A Beauty,
things got wild.
The music was loud and the
band was jamming the rest of the
night in a sweaty frolic of Tubes
tunes.
“While Punks On Dope” and
“Talk To You Later” were two of
the most popular songs of the eve
ning, as the audience grew more
and more enthusiastic with the
band.
Waybill, who continually drank
Corona beer (maybe to ease the
pain of his back injury?) and played
his stylish leads through the on
slaught of distortion, seemed
coolly pleased with the band’s
performance, making comments
about the audience and band alike.
If you missed them this time,
feel bad. It was a lesson in ’70s
nostalgia, as well as an intimate
encounter with a sincere band.
