Students beware: UNL Police towing By Chris Carroll Staff Reporter The most recent “tow” list has been issued by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police department and some of those who already have been towed aren’t happy, said Ron Fuller, staff assistant for parking serv ices. The “tow” list has 3,400 automo biles on it, Fuller said, and is 15 pages long. Two weeks are receiving a ticket, individuals arc notified, he said. Fuller said individuals with at least two tickets that arc 20 days past due could have their car impounded if the vehicle is parked on campus. However, Fuller said the police department isn’t interested in im pounding vehicles and will work with individuals who’vc been ticketed. Efforts to accommodate students include a 30-day payment plan and an appeal process, Fuller said. Students need to contact the de partment about difficulties they are having in paying a fine, Fuller said. He said individuals being towed have had more than 20 days to resolve FRIDAY AT 9:00 P.M. SATURDAY AT 7:00 & 9:00 P M. Lt. John W. Burke, parking admin istrator, said that an average of 10,000 tickets arc issued each month. The department soon will be automated to relieve that problem, he said. Once the system is automated, the 20-day grace period will be more strictly enforced. Burke said with the automated system more students, with outstand ing tickets, will find a “hold” put on their registration and grade reports. Once a student’s vehicle has been towed, he said, the outstanding tickets must be paid with cash, a Mastercard or Visa. Burke said each vehicle towed has an average of 3.5 outstanding tickets of $30. These figures arc compiled in the office and have been consistent for the past three years, he said. The largest outstanding ticket on the list is for $240, Fuller said. Some students who come to the office after being towed have called department employees many “un printable” names, Fuller said. Marlene Beyke, director of devel opment for the Association of Stu dents of the University of Nebraska, said she has requested a copy of the “tow” list for the ASUN information office where it will be posted. Burke said he hopes posting the list of fines wi'l encourage students to pay their fines. Also, Burke said, a 500-stall park ing lot will be opening next week at 19th Street between R and Vine streets. Permits will be required. ||i ■ wi piiii——in ii iinmi .... ..wanm JimmIB 1 NOODLES COMEDY CLUB I Featuring nationally known comedians. Shows every Thursday 8:30 PM, Friday & Saturday 9:00 PM.
