Osborne said Taylor ran well throughout the
contest.
“He ran about as well as I’ve seen him,”
Osborne said.
Taylor, who became the first Nebraska
quarterback to rush for over 2,000 career yards
by picking up 154 on 12 carries against Iowa
State, said he was pleased with his perform
ance. He said the career yardage mark and the
fact that he moved past former Husker quarter
back Turner Gill into No. 4 on the career total
offense list were both special.
“It means a lot to me,” Taylor said, “because
when I leave I want to be remembered as one of
the best quarterbacks Nebraska’s ever had.”
Taylor gave Ncbraskaa 38-0 lead with 11:31
remaining in the third quarter when he capped
an 11 -play, 80-yard drive with an 11 -yard run.
Following a 42-yard field goal by Iowa Slate
kicker Jeff Shudak and a 1-yard run by Gerry
Gdowski that gave the Huskers a 45-3 lead,
Iowa State scored its first touchdown of the
contest when running back Paul Thibodeaux
scored on a 67-yard run.
Thibodeaux said his run provided an emo
tional lift for Iowa State.
“The touchdown was a spark because we
hadn’t scored in the last six quarters,” Thi
bodeaux said. “I think it excited the team
because 1 saw everyone jumping up and down
on the sideline.”
Nebraska scored its final touchdown when
freshman running back Leodis Rowers scored
on a 3-yard run. Iowa State added a touchdown
when quarterback Derek DeGennaro threw an
18-yard scoring strike to running back
Sylvester Nickerson.
Osborne said the Huskers played well
against a fired-up Iowa State squad.
Clark and wingback Richard Bell said
Nebraska can use the victory to gain momen
tum for the rest of the season. The Huskers will
close out their regular-season schedule by fac
ing Colorado Saturday in Lincoln and then
traveling to Norman, Okla., to face the Okla
homa Sooners.
“This is what football isall about,” Bell said.
“We got two games left and we don’t care how
good they are — our goal is to beat them.”
Clark said he doesn’t like finishing the
season against Colorado and Oklahoma.
“The next two games arc going to be tough.
It’s going to tell what our season is going to be
like,” Clark said. “I would rather play an easier
game but it’s not on our schedule.”
