The rest of the auditions go about
the same, with older groups doing
more intricate things. The skips
across the stage turn to spins and
leaps.
A group of older boys all stand
together, way in the back of the hall,
speaking only among themselves, as
if they were self-supportive.
Finally, there’s nothing to do but
wait—wait for the lists.
THE LIST
The end of the day is a reward for
some, nothing for others
The judges don’t mean to torture
the dancei s, but they also do not make
snap decisions.
“This is the worst part,” one
mother said. “We’re all typical stage
moms, hoping our kids get in. I had
some Pepto-Bismal before I came.”
Eventually, the lists go up. The
screams.
“I made it!”
“I didn’t.”
“I feel yucky, it’s so embarrass
ing,” Missy Jakoubeksaid. She didn’t
get cast for her second audition.
After double-checking the list, the
happy and the dejected traveled out of
the building, back to grim reality.
“Hey,” a girl screamed to her
friend. “Whal’d you get?”
Her friend looks up, with tears in
her eyes.
“They toweu my car,” she said.
