Duffy’s presents a “comedy work shop” every other week, and the next one is Oct. 3. Duffy’s began the work shop after it quit bringing profes sional comedy to the bar eight or nine months ago. The workshop allows people to get up and try out material, as well as presenting ensemble skits and improvisation. The workshops are taped and some of the bits are played on KZUM radio’s “Magic Dragon Theater.” There is no cover charge for the workshops. McMeen said by the end of the evening the bar is usually packed and he said he has begun to notice people coming regularly just for the comedy. McMeen said he has considered presenting the workshop every week, if the workshop ensemble can add some members. Duffy’s also might charge a small cover to give the comedians some repayment for their time. The Des Moines restaurant was the first to try a comedy club and Shaw handles the booking for it and Omaha’s Noodles club. The club presents national circui comedians and has presented big name comics such as Jerry Scinfclt and Carol Liefcrt. Johnson also said he didn’t want to be competitive with other comedy spots. ! “I’m not here to take away anybody’s business. I’m here to make it all better for everybody.
