Award-winning gospel singer to perform Friday at Devaney Sandi Patti’s 1988-89 world tour is coming to the Bob Devaney Sports Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The gospel singer has recorded a string of albums, won 19 Dove Awards (given by the Gospel Music Association), has had four gold albums and won four Grammy Awards. Patti struck out on her own in 1979 after the release of “Sandi’s Song.’ After studying to be a high school music teacher at Anderson University in Indiana, the change to touring singer was dramatic. “I never really dreamed that I’d be doing what I’m doing now,” she said. In 1981, “Love Overflowing” was released on The Benson Company’s Impact Records label, and Patti began to attract the atten tion of the gospel music establish ment. She was named Gospel Art ist of the Year and Female Vocalist of the year in 1982, and her rendi tion of “We Shall Behold Him” was honored as Song of the Year. In 1983, Patti won the Dove Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year and Inspirational Album of the Year. Patti also won a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Per-, form ance -Con tem porary, In the meantime, Patti contin ued to perform at concerts and at special Christian gatherings throughout the nation, averaging upwards of 175 appearances a year. “My audiences have always been very supportive,” she said. “They’ve allowed me to grow even as I begin to understand more fully how God is using me. I feel very much that we are all part of the same wonderful family; that’s the basis of our communication.” In 1983, Patti also released two more albums, won three more Dove Awards and won a Grammy for Best Gospel Performance-Duo, an honor she shared with Lamclle Harris. Patti won another Grammy nomination and four more Dove Awards in 1984. In July 1985, the Recording Industry Association of America presented Patti with her first gold album, “More than Wonderful,” recognizing sales of more than 500,000 copies. Tickets are $11.50 and $10.50, with $1 off for groups of 20 or more. Courtesy of the Helvering Agency FOR SALE 19* color $60. 15" Color $45. 10* Color $40 & 25* Color $30 Nice RCA. VHS. VCR.
