New Alliance Party
Nanci Hamilton’s reasons for the
formation of the New Alliance Party
(Daily Nebraskan, Sept. 15) are not
good enough to convince me to vote
for any of its candidates. I will not
support a third political party simply
because it is a third party. If you want
my vote, then start explaining your
party’s position on relevant issues
instead of complaining about how the
Democrats and Republicans are out to
get you.
opiftim
in addition, your suggestion that
Chief Justice William Hastings' deci
sion to limit Ernie Chambers to run
ning for one political office was based
on a political desire to limit the New
Alliance Party’s participation is a
cheap shot at the state’s judicial sys
tem. Hastings did not get to be chief
justice of the Nebraska Supreme
Court by making such politically
based decisions.
And if Hastings did suggest Cham -
bers could run for both offices, his
reversal of opinion two weeks later
does not in any way indicate that his
decision was politically based.
Haven’t you ever changed your mind
after examining the facts?
1 hope that the next time I hear
from a representative of the New
Alliance Party, it will be about real
issues instead of meaningless com
plaints.

Greek defends intense
bonds of sisterhood
I have attended the University of
Ncbraska-Lincoln lor three ydhrs and
I have noticed that a few somewhat
controversial issues arc consistently
raised every fall. One in particular I
wpuld like to address is about the
greek system.
It’s not my intent to perpetuate the
greek vs. non-greek debate. I believe
we can all acknowledge that there are
pros and cons to each group. 1 would
only like to offer a few comments on
behalf of the greek system.
It's extremely difficult to express
in words the emotions involved with
belonging to and working for some
thing greater than the self. The emo
tions, strong and real, are a mixture of
joy, pride, self-respect, love and from
the challenge of it all, frustrauon. It is
a wonderful feeling using my time,
energy and talents knowing the bene
fits arc not for me alone.
Each person must decide whether
or not to be a pan of the greek system.
To the individuals who choose not to
be greek, I ask that you realize there
are many great things about the greek
system. It just depends on what you
choose to see.

Other odors pollute
airspace for smoker
Please, may we discuss the smok
ing issue without personalities? The
issue appears to be that non-smokers
object to smokers’ litter and smoke
invading their space.
As for the litter, I concede the
point. I am now meticulous about not
leaving a trail of ashes and cigarette
butts wherever I go and smoke.
As far as cigarette smoke invading
someone’s space: When we all reach
a cultural consensus that none of us
has the “right” to invade the airspace
of others with unwelcome factory
stimuli, then I will icsDCCt the com
plaints of non-smokers. Currently, I
see only one segment of the popula
tion attacking the other. Let’s be fair
and place “No perfume” and “No
farting” signs next to the “No smok
ing” ones, or take the signs down.
I can say with reasonable certainty
that my smoke doesn’t nauseate any
one any more than others’ noxious
odors disgust me.

Student defends action
by Women’s Center
This letter is in response to the
editorial (DN, Sept. 15) on the
Women's Resource Center. Tearing
up Playboy magazines in the name of
feminism may not “be a nice thing to
do” (why not?) but neither is the
exploitation and degradation of
women’s bodies. I believe the actions
by the Women’s Resource Center on
this issue was perfectly justifiable.
By the way, perhaps the Daily
Nebraskan staff should be a little
more up-to-date and not use sexist
language, whether flagrant or not.

Reader gives support
to Sen. Dave Karnes
While it’s true that former Gov.
Bob Kerrey has a lot of chansma, it’s
also true that he is very adept at say ing
one thing to please one group and
another thing to please a different
group.
On the one hand, he accuses Sen.
Dave Karnes of being weak and in
consistent when it comes to lough
budget decisions. On the other hand,
he is worried about increasing funds
for food stamps, Medicaid and other
welfare programs. He hasn’t said that
he wants to raise taxes, but he hasn’t
said how he is going to pay for in
creased funding for welfare, either.
You can bet he won’ t vote against any
tax increases.
I don’t like the way Karnes got into
his position any more than the most
devoted Kerrey supporter. However,
if we cast our vole according to the
issues, we should support Karnes
because he is the only one who is
addressing the issues in this cam
paign.
