Heavy metal band’s debut album
called ‘ Carnival of Mediocrity ’
By Bryan Peterson
Staff Reviewer
I guess my problem with the debut,
self-tilled LP by Circus of Power is
that I’ve heard it all before. The band
is trying to pass its sound off as the
new “street rock,” “for those will to
forgo make-up and big hair for tat
toos, motorcycles and real faded
jeans.”

Maybe the record companies are
too eager to cash in on tne eui rent
wave of heavy metal’s popularity;
maybe I am just too picky, but it
seems to me that loo many metal
bands arc putting out too many rec
ords too easily these days.
It seems that a band has to do little
more than put together an average
demo tape, fit into some pre-selected
category (as in "street rock”), and get
noticed on the Los Angeles or New
York City club circuit to get signed by
a major label.
There is nothing wrong with the
band’s music. They are all competent
musicians who play together well, but
they just lack originality. Formula
rock would be more apt than street
rock.
Start with a simple, throbbing
drum beat. Add a growling guitar with
a few solos, then throw in some in
nocuous bass lines. Finally, add a
singer with “deep, sensual vocals”
who can keep a straight face while
singing lyrics from songs like “Back
Scat Mama” and “White Trash
Queen.”
Actually, “Backseat Mama” has
the best music of all the album's
songs, It has one of those guitar riffs
that will plague me for the next week,
the kind that makes me slip into a
guitar solo in the middle of a philoso
phy exam and then look around nerv
ously to make sure no one noticed.
But the lyrics are horrendous.
"Drivin' down the highway, /
can't gel enough speed/ / got a tank
full ofnitro, but baby that ain't what
/ need/ Won't you shove a little closer,
slip it in gear! Easy on the clutch, ijf
you know what I mean, dear"
Lyrics like these pervade the entire
album and turn otherwise average (if
unoriginal) metal songs into sludge.
Iggy Pop contributed the words
and music of “Crazy,” which Circus
of Power would have been belter off
without.
I know Iggy is one of the founders
of primal, raw, rock 'n' roll, but this
song is slow and dimensionless and
makes me wonder how he ever be
came an underground icon in the first
place.
It certainly was not from efforts
like this. I just can’t respect someone
who could offer the following to
another band: " When / tried to get rid
of this wriggling find! She hassled my
bones with a mean-assed grind/ She
spit ana .she hissed and then she called
me a turd/1 was so surprised I could
not say a word."
The lyrics to the songs “Call of the
Wild” and “Machine” arc more
thoughtful but cannot make up for an
album’s worth of sex/fast car meta
phors and muck. The only song with
fairly good words AND music.
“Needles,” gets lost in the mediocrity
of the rest of the album. The anti-drug
message is just lost in an orgy of
sweaty, squirming, backseat, heavy
metal sex songs.
