MOMIX from Page 10
approach is the variety of meanings
packed into each dance.
“Elva” could have been a com
ment about the effect of TV on our
society, the fading of sexual roles, or
even a new twist on the theme of
“Elvis is God.”
Or, it could be just a bunch of
people having a good time with a TV
and some spotlights.
In any case, Momix has something
for everyone.
Besides the sheer inventiveness of
performance, Momix has superb
lighting, wonderful music and great
props.
In “Momix,” the prop is a huge,
sleazy, white tropical leisure suit.
Joseph Mills performs a sort of ba
nana cabaret piece, looking a little bit
like a small man trying to Till bigger
shoes.
Mills creates illusion by holding
poses for seemingly endless seconds.
Supported by his cane, Mills leaps
into the air for at least a full heartbeat.

He looks as though he is bounding in
slow motion.
At first, “Brain Waves” looks like
a high school physics experiment. A
long sheet is rolled to the other side of
stage, and someone flips the carpet
from the left side.
The wave travels the length of the
carpet and disappears stage right.
This happens several times, until a
wave comes from the left.
What results is a fight between the
unseen people on the left and the
right. The result is absolutely hysteri
cal.
The final work, “E.C.,” is a
shadow show. An alien comes down
to earth. A little boy falls to his
mother’s arms, but Mom turns into a
Venus flytrap. Even Superman makes
a guest appearance.
The main question is “How is it
done?” Momix refused to divulge the
secret, but suggested playing with
two light sources and a sheet.
Humanity likes a mystery, and it
was a very satisfied audience that left
Kimball Recital Hall Tuesday night.
