Art exhibitions show abstract paintings, watercolors by alumni living in Texas By Matt Roubicek Staff Reporter Twelve University ot' Nebraska Tincoln alumni may be living in Texas, but their art is being shown in Richards Hall in a Nebraska/Texas art exhibition. Treview I The most consistently interesting work is that of Laurence McFarlcy. He uses overlapping photographs to bring out a parucular point in a land scape. The print, “The Pictographs are Very Subtle and Hard to Locate,” is probably the best of his display. It combines two prints looking out of the mouth of a small cave. They overlap towards the middle of the cave opening. The effect is that the viewer is almost totally enveloped by the open ing. Only after a few seconds is it possible to move on and survey the rest of the picture. On the I lip side is Robert Green. There isn’t anything particularly bad about his paintings, but neither is there anything good. Muted colors and badly thought out abstractions add up toa fairly boring time. It seems that Green thinks large, oddly placed blocks of color are interesting to sec. Martha Wittslruck’s work cer tainly wins the prize for the most fun to look at. In “Spiral Space,” she uses whirling swirls of yellow, violet and w hue with splashes of black mixed in. The black immediately captures the viewers’ attention and guides them through the rest of the painting. Wittstruck's other works gener ally stick with one dominant color, suchasblueor green. She continues to use the swirling spirals, but without the contrasts of “Spiral Space,” they get tiresome much faster. Without a doubt, the best piece in the exhibition is “The Dark Night” by Mark Anderson. It uses dark greens and just a splash of a cool pink. It gives us an almost featureless void extended just about as far as the eyes can sec. Justshortof bcingoutof sight is some sort of landscape. However, at the distance it is from us, it’s impossible to know if it’s a refuge or just an illusion. Haunting and wonderful, alone it’s enough to make a trip to Richards Hall worth while. As seems to be the general rule, the rest of Anderson's presentation is good enough, but basically unin spired. It can be; liked but not loved. Gary Goldberg’s “My Bedroom” is the best of his displayed photos. Done in black and white, the picture is very dark. Flying out from the middle of the scene are three windows from which light streams freely. Under the window, it’s possible to find a bed with mosquito netting draped over it. ~ See RICHARDS on 18 Arts Council awards grants to organizations The Nebraska Arts Council awarded grants totaling 5744,709 to organizations in 33 Nebraska communities during its quarterly meeting in Scotlsbluff.
