‘Breakdancing’ elephants end performance CIRQUE from Page 14 crty horse made big messes. A clown from the next act took advantage of the humorous possibili ties of tnc horse’s accident before it was cleaned up. The Tokaji Troupe from Hungary, the Marinof troupe from Romania, and the Hernandez troupe from the United States performed with a tee ter-totter. Two people would jump onto one end, catapulting a small woman onto the the shoulders of two, three, even four other people. Each seemed to have the same act, although the Hernandez troupe seemed the most skilled. The Soaring Stars took a turn at the trapeze. A daring act, they still per formed with a safety net. It turned out to be a good provision. At the end, one of the performers slipped out of a trapeze artist’s grasp. At this point, the stage was set for a grand finale. The ringmaster began * rapping. The Live Action Squad from T New York City began to dance. Assisted by his son, Mark Oliver, Gebel-Williams brought out an entire complcmentofelephants. Swaying to the rap beat, the elephants paraded around the ring, then put their front legs on the back of the one ahead of it. Showgirls in purple, yellow and green wigs rode the pachyderms, lending an atmosphere of bizarre inner city to the affair. And finally, after two and a half hours, the greatest show on earth was over. Although two and a half hours may ' be a little long for small children to sit through, there didn’t seem to be any major problems until after the per formance was over. The Ringling Bros, and Bamum & Bailey Circus will perform at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. today. Tickets are $7.50 and $9.50. As the ringmaster says at the end of every performance, “May all your days be circus days.” Brian Shellito/Daily Nebraskan Wants you: fun, games, music -dancing COLLEGE NIGHT THURS NO COVER-2.50 PITCHERS Can Beer.95*Bar Drinks.95 All Night Long! I Students Awaiting Award Notices Regrettably, not all students who applied for financial aid for the 1988-89 academic year have received their award notifications. Students most likely affected are those who were randomly selected for verification and those who did not submit their FAFs to the College Scholarship Service until late spring or summer. The delay in processing applications is due to the installation of a highly complex computerized financial aid management system that has taken longer than anticipated to put into production. Happily, the system is now operational with only a few minor problems to be resolved. These minor problems have not stopped us from making awards to more than sixty percent of all applicants, but until we are certain of the systems ability to accurately perform calculations associated with the verification process, we must proceed very carefully and cautiously. Note: Not all students who are still awaiting awards will find themselves eligible for aid. We unfortunately can not accurately predict who will receive aid how much aid will be awarded until the system has performed its calculations. Moreover, some students who received award notices earlier in the summer may not receive their aid because they have not; •sent us their original Student Aid Reports (SARS), ‘had financial aid transcripts sent to us from any and all prior colleges attended, or •signed their award notifications and statements of purpose and returned them to our office. Federal law prohibits aid officers from disbursing funds until all necessary documents are on file in the Financial Aid office. Financial Aid is a partnership between students and the aid officer and requires each to perform specific tasks before any federal funds can legally be dispensed. Perkins Loans (formerly NDSL) are scheduled to be disbursed in the Nebraska Union on September 26th, 27th, and 28th. If you have been awarded a Perkins Loan and acknowledged your acceptance of the loan by signing your Financial Aid Notification and sending it back to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, you should expect to receive a check for the amount according to the dates listed above. Perkins loans awarded in the future will be disbursed through the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid on an ongoing basis. If you received a Guaranteed Student Loan as part of your award package, and followed the instructions on the application, you should expect to receive a check for the amount of the loan within four weeks of processing. (Loans of less than $1000 will be disbursed in one check; amounts over $1000 will be issued in two installments.) Checks will be made available through the Office of Student Accounts—110 Administration Building. PLUS Loans are sent directly to the parents of students by the lending institutions. SLS loans are sent to UNL for disbursement. These loans take the same approximate amount of time to process as do GSL applications, and will be made available through the Office of Student Accounts. Reminder: Most financial aid is disbursed in two equal installments. One half the total award at the beginning of the fall semester and one hall the total award at the beginning of the spring semester. All Students Who Have Experienced Delays in Finalizing Their Financial Aid University payment deadlines for tuition and housing will be extended for those who qualify for financial aid but do not receive a final award notification in time to ' arrange funding for those payments. Generally speaking, payments of tuition and housing will be deferred up to four weeks from the receipt of a final award notification. This will allow sufficient time for processing Guaranteed Student Loans and other loans. It is important to understand that the University assumes all students arrive on campus in the fall with sufficient funds to meet their initial expenses. The Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid can help those with extreme need meet their initial expenses through short term loans. Remember however, short term loans require a cosigner (in most cases) and repayment within a prescribed period of time. Short term loans also carry a minimal interest charge. Not all students may qualify for these loans if they have a past history of loan default or late repayment. For more information about short term loans, visit the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, Room 51, Administration Building. __ — - ' ■ ... ......■'.—
