Conference may serve UNL By I Jeanne Nelson Staff Reporter On a recent trip to Washington D.C., Kim Beavers learned that both she and student government can make a difference at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Beavers, second vice president of the Association of Students of the University of Nebraska, attended a National Affirmative Action Office sponsored women’s student leader ship conference June 2-4. Beavers said by meeting other student leaders she has gained a dif ferent perspective about the student ^^jnmentandtoerossiblechanecs ASUN can make at the university. Representatives from another uni versity told about their student gov ernment, who “took on their university’s Board of Regents and won,” Beavers said. This story was significant, she said, because she could relate it to former ASUN president Andy Pollock’s successful campaign to raise faculty salaries. “We really can make a differ ence,” she said. Representatives from other uni versities also explained how their student governments operate, she said. ^“Meetm^wjtlwjeopl^rorTKliffei^ ent schools and comparing election wm styles and other things with them gave me a chance to get new ideas for UNL,” she said. One of these ideas, she said, is to promote a better relationship between AS UN and the University Program Council so they can work more closely together. Another idea is to make the women’s program at UNL stronger, she said. The Women’s Resource Center is an asset to the university, she said, but it needs more public relations work to become widely recognized.
